Maps provided by Haringey Council show the borough line running close to the station, separating nearby streets between the two authorities. Despite sharing the same local Tube station, people living only a short walk from each other could find themselves paying council tax to different councils and using different borough services. The wider Bounds Green and Bowes Park area straddles Haringey and Enfield, with the neighbouring districts forming the north-eastern corner of Haringey and extending into the south-eastern corner of Enfield. Travelcard Zones Bounds Green station is also positioned on the boundary between Travelcard Zones 3 and 4, rather than being solely within one zone. The station is exclusively served by the Piccadilly line, with Wood Green being the next stop towards central London and Arnos Grove the next stop towards Cockfosters. Interestingly, while Arnos Grove falls within Enfield, Bounds Green station remains officially within Haringey. Historic England documents Bounds Green under the London Borough of Haringey and Arnos Grove under the London Borough of Enfield. History Bounds Green station has been operational for nearly 100 years. It opened on September 19, 1932, as part of the Piccadilly line's major northern extension from Finsbury Park to Arnos Grove. This was a significant development for the Piccadilly line, with Manor House, Turnpike Lane, and Wood Green also opening as part of the same extension. Services were later extended further north to Southgate, Oakwood, and eventually Cockfosters in 1933. Interestingly, the station was not always intended to be called Bounds Green. Historic England notes that Wood Green North and Brownlow Road were also considered before the final decision was made. The station was designed by Charles Holloway James, with Charles Holden overseeing the work for the Underground Group. Its distinctive building features an octagonal ticket hall, red and brown brickwork, large windows, and a prominent ventilation tower. In January 2010, Bounds Green was given Grade II listed status. Historic England described it as a distinctive example of the Modernist architecture used on the Piccadilly line extension. Wartime History Bounds Green station has a tragic wartime history. During the Second World War, Londoners widely used Underground stations as shelters from German bombing. On October 13, 1940, Bounds Green station was struck during an air raid. Historic England records that 19 people were killed when a German bomb hit the station, and a memorial plaque on the platform commemorates those who lost their lives. Today, the station continues to serve the residential communities surrounding Bounds Green Road. Passengers emerging from the station are officially in Haringey, but a short walk can take them into a different London borough altogether.
