Школьница с одним аттестатом стала лауреатом премии за карьеру в социальной работе

A childhood encounter with a social worker has inspired an award-winning learner to pursue a career in social care. Shelby Weaver-Slaughter, who left school with just one GCSE, was supported during a difficult period in her life and now hopes to make a difference for others. Ms Weaver-Slaughter said: "When I was younger, I had a social worker who supported me during a difficult time in my life. "They had a positive impact on me and inspired me to want to become a social worker myself so that I can support others and make a difference in people’s lives." Her journey into social care began with an apprenticeship at Bridgend Council, which led to further adult learning at Bridgend College. Despite challenges with maths, she completed Level 2 Communication and Level 2 Application of Number Essential Skills as part of her apprenticeship. She has since completed a Level 4 Social Services Practitioner Higher Apprenticeship and now plans to study for a university degree. In recognition of her achievements, she has won the Essential Skills for Life Award at the Inspire! Adult Learning Awards, which will be presented at the Coal Exchange in Cardiff on September 23. The awards recognise those who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to learning.
