Благотворительный приют в Уотфорде получил грант на внедрение экологичных систем

A homeless charity has made new steps towards sustainability thanks to a £300 grant. New Hope House, based on Queens Road in Watford, is a 10-bed recovery home supporting former homeless people recovering from alcohol and substance misuse. The home has invested in environmentally friendly equipment thanks to funding from the Hertfordshire Community Foundation. The grant has been used to purchase a water butt and collection system, a hot composting system, and a Bokashi composting system. The water butt will capture and store rainwater for use around the house and garden, reducing reliance on mains water for tasks like watering plants. The hot composting system will convert garden and organic waste into nutrient-rich compost through controlled decomposition, cutting down on the amount of organic material sent for disposal. The Bokashi system offers an indoor, airtight method to ferment kitchen waste, including meat, bones, and dairy products not suitable for traditional composting. The processed material can then be used to enrich soil or further composted, supporting the garden while diverting food waste from landfill. The new equipment will not only reduce waste and conserve resources, but will also provide residents with opportunities to get involved in practical environmental activities. Ian Bond, who runs New Hope’s Cultivate horticultural project, was responsible for installing the composting and water harvesting systems. The improvements are intended to help make New Hope House more resource-efficient and environmentally friendly, while also supporting residents’ recovery and rehabilitation.
