A Skipton business is reaching new markets with the help of a regional export grant scheme. The Silicone Straw Company, based in Skipton, has received support from the Get Exporting programme, which offers grants of up to £10,000 to help businesses grow overseas. Charlotte Walsh, owner of the Silicone Straw Company, said: "As a small business owner, I have always seen the potential in the US and Europe, but the costs involved in developing international sales can be a significant barrier. "This support has made a real difference to my business, giving me the confidence to explore new markets and invest in opportunities which would have been out of reach." The Get Exporting programme, backed by the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority, has already supported more than 70 businesses in reaching markets across North America, Europe, and Asia. The latest funding round takes the total grant pot to £1.2 million. David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, said: "The success of Get Exporting shows the huge global appetite for products and services made right here in York and North Yorkshire. "With £1.2 million in funding now committed, we're helping businesses overcome barriers and drive millions in new sales across the world." The Combined Authority estimates that the expanded programme could generate more than £90 million in new international trade. Businesses can apply for grants of £3,000 to £10,000 to fund export activity. The fourth round of applications opens on September 1 and closes on September 30.
