A DEAL has been agreed to save a Runcorn employer that fell into administration, which will ‘save local jobs’. In March, it was reported that Vynova Runcorn Ltd had entered administration, placing around 90 jobs at risk. The Runcorn site produces chlorine, ethylene dichloride (EDC), and caustic soda-key chemicals used in the manufacture of PVC and a range of everyday products. The site, which has operated since 1833, includes a membrane electrolysis plant run in a joint venture with Ineos Inovyn. Now, it has been confirmed that Ineos Inovyn has agreed to acquire the remaining 50 per cent shareholding in Runcorn MCP Ltd, together with the assets and employees associated with EDC production in Runcorn from Vynova Runcorn Limited. The acquisition remains subject to the completion of the necessary legal and regulatory processes. However, the transaction is expected to complete later this year and will fully integrate the chlor-alkali and EDC value chain under Ineos Inovyn. An Ineos Inovyn spokesman said: “By bringing these businesses together, Ineos Inovyn will strengthen the long-term future of the site and enhance security of supply for customers. “Around 98 per cent of the chlorine used in drinking water treatment is supplied by Runcorn, highlighting the site’s critical importance to public health and national infrastructure. “The acquisition represents an important step in safeguarding the continuity of strategically critical chlor-alkali operations in the UK. “These products are essential for water treatment and food manufacturing, and they support a wide range of industries, including pharmaceuticals, healthcare, and construction. “Strengthening the UK's chlor-alkali backbone is vital for strategic autonomy and national resilience.” Runcorn and Helsby MP Sarah Pochin previously called for a meeting with a Government minister over the ‘uncertain future’ of the Runcorn site. On the news of the deal, Ms Pochin said: “I am delighted that an agreement has been reached for Ineos Inovyn to acquire Vynova’s Runcorn operations. “After such a difficult and uncertain period, I hope that this announcement brings much-needed reassurance to the workforce, their families, and the wider Runcorn community. “Subject to final approvals, the deal will secure local jobs and strengthen the long-term future of this vital part of our critical national infrastructure.”
