В Пенрит открыта памятная доска, посвященная уникальной системе почтовой сортировки в движении

A new information plaque celebrating a unique piece of Penrith’s railway history has been installed on Thacka Lane, between Lark Lane and Thacka Nature Reserve. The plaque tells the story of Penrith’s Mail Click, a little-known system used by Travelling Post Office trains to exchange mail without stopping. Using trackside equipment, trains could collect and drop off mailbags while travelling at speed, helping keep post moving efficiently through the rail network. The final mailbags dropped from a moving train using the Penrith apparatus were handled at Thacka Lane on October 4, 1971. Installed by Network Rail on behalf of Penrith Town Council, the plaque stands close to the site of the original apparatus beside the railway line. The council thanked Network Rail’s Carlisle off-track installation team, Garry Cunningham, Mike Williams and Mark Cannon, for completing the work promptly. It also thanked the Cumbria Railway Association for supporting the historical content and supplying images featured on the plaque. The project was approved and funded by the council’s Communities Committee as part of its work to celebrate and promote Penrith’s heritage. Penrith Town Council hopes the plaque will help residents and visitors discover an often-overlooked part of the town’s railway and postal history.
