Строительство новой крыши в закрытой библиотеке Кардондаль начнется в 2026 году

Construction of a new roof at the closed Cardonald library is finally set to start later this year after “high risk” panels were discovered. The library was shut in September 2023 when reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) was identified throughout the roof of the Mosspark Drive building. Glasgow Life, the council’s culture and leisure arm, initially said work would begin in autumn last year, but it has been held back as further surveys were needed. Plans for re-roofing works to the library, including the removal of RAAC roof panels, have now been submitted to Glasgow City Council. The project would also include demolition of rooftop water tank housing. A “new, higher-level insulated metal roof system” is expected to be installed. Glasgow Life also intends to provide a Changing Places facility, which are larger accessible toilets. The spokesperson said: “Cardonald library closed in September 2023 after RAAC was identified throughout the roof, with 91% of panels assessed as critical or high-risk. Replacing the entire roof remains the only viable long-term solution. “Although work was expected to begin in autumn 2025, further structural investigations, design development and technical surveys were needed because of the roof’s condition and the complexity of the building’s systems. “The project has also expanded to include improved roof access and a new Changing Places facility. A planning application has now been submitted, with construction expected to begin later in 2026. “A construction programme and expected timeline will be confirmed after a contractor is appointed.” Campaigners have been calling on Glasgow Life to reopen the library, with protests previously held outside the venue. Funding of £1.9m has been provided to the project from Glasgow City Council’s community asset fund. RAAC, a cheaper alternative to standard concrete, is a lightweight material which was used mostly in flat roofing, but also in floors and walls, between the 1950s and 1990s.
