A major milestone has been reached in the long-running transformation of Queensway as two key roads have reopened to drivers and pedestrians.
Sutton Road and Southchurch Road are now open as part of the Better Queensway regeneration project, marking a significant step in reshaping the area and improving connections through Southend town centre.
While some pavement works are still being completed, the reopening is being hailed as an important stage in the wider regeneration programme.
Once the roads project is complete, ultimately the Better Queensway scheme aims to transform the area by delivering 1,700 new homes in place of four dilapidated tower blocks.
The milestone is also providing an opportunity to reflect on the original construction of Queensway more than 50 years ago and the people who helped build it.
Among them is former concrete finisher Ken Waller, who worked on the original Queensway development in the mid-1970s.
Ken was part of a team of apprentices and experienced tradesmen involved in building what was then viewed as a modern solution for Southend.
During his career, he worked on a number of major construction projects across the city but says Queensway remains one of the schemes he remembers most clearly.
One of his strongest memories is watching the original bridge being lifted into place by what he described as the biggest crane he had ever seen, brought to Southend from Scotland.
His daughter recently contacted the regeneration team after growing up hearing stories about her father's role in laying thousands of the cobbles that became a distinctive feature of the area.
Ken said: “Working on Queensway felt like helping to create a new, modern future for Southend.
“I worked on a number of sites across Southend during my career, but Queensway was one of the projects that always stayed with me.
“What makes me most proud is that Queensway was built by hardworking people, from young apprentices to experienced tradesmen, all learning and building together.”
Councillor Daniel Cowan, leader of Southend Council, said the reopening of the roads was an important moment for both the regeneration project and the city.
He said: “As we celebrate the opening of Sutton Road and Southchurch Road, it is important to recognise the people who helped build the original Queensway.
“Ken's story reminds us that this area has always been about creating opportunities and improving connections for residents.”
Further work on the wider regeneration programme is continuing.
