A GREENOCK veteran who was part of the late Queen’s Silver Jubilee guard of honour says he will proudly turn out to support the Royal Regiment of Scotland as it receives the Freedom of Inverclyde next month. The presentation will take place on September 5 at Battery Park, following a public parade, which will take place along the Esplanade. Tam Gorman, who served in the Royal Highland Fusiliers (RHF) between 1971 and 1977, said the honour is a well-earned one. The-76-year-old said: “I'm wishing the Royal Regiment of Scotland all the best when they come to Inverclyde. “I wouldn't know anybody that's in it now, unless there's some oldies that are going to be there. “I will be down to honour the guys wearing my medals and my cap because they deserve it with the work they're doing.” Two of the medals are Tam's own, and two belonged to his late brother, Eddie, who also served in the military and who passed away in 2017. “I've got my medals from Northern Ireland and 50 years of the RHF," Tam said. "Plus, I've got my brother's medals from Northern Ireland and the UN, and I wear those medals in honour of him. “Eddie was six years older than me, and he worked in the armoury and as a medic, so I kind of followed in his footsteps.” After six months of training at Glencorse Barracks in Midlothian, Tam's first posting was toSingapore. “It was jungle training warfare, and it wasn't very nice. It's not like you see on television. It's real jungle. “I did my first tour of Northern Ireland early 1972, and then I came back. "Altogether I did three tours of Northern Ireland.” Read more Navy veteran named as chieftain for Gourock Highland Games Thanks to the Queen you can have 9 days off work by booking just 3 Royal Mint celebrate Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with new coin for 2022 He said his time in County Armagh was difficult as the army was not very popular with many locals.
