Ральф Литтл в роли Алекса Лимаса: в Бате идет премьера спектакля по роману Джона Ле Карре «Шпион, который вернулся из холода»

John le Carré's The Spy Who Came In From The Cold is a landmark of Cold War fiction, a novel steeped in ambiguity, betrayal and moral exhaustion. Bringing such an intensely internal work to the stage might appear a fool's errand, but this gripping adaptation, written by David Eldridge and directed by Jeremy Herrin, succeeds by embracing the novel's psychological tension rather than trying to imitate cinematic spectacle. Fresh from acclaimed runs at Chichester Festival Theatre and in London's West End, the production arrives at Theatre Royal Bath to Saturday, August 22 with comedian Ralf Little taking on the daunting role of British intelligence officer Alec Leamas. Best known for his television work in The Royale Family and Death in Paradise, Little proves an inspired piece of casting, delivering a performance of understated authority that captures a man whose idealism has long since been eroded by years spent in the shadows. Leamas is introduced as a weary operative watching yet another East German contact die at the Berlin Wall. Ready to leave "the Circus" behind, he is instead persuaded into one final mission that blurs every distinction between loyalty and manipulation. Little wisely avoids melodrama, allowing Leamas's emotional disintegration to emerge gradually through weary resignation, flashes of anger and moments of unexpected vulnerability. Jeremy Herrin's production is beautifully judged. The staging is lean and cinematic, with fluid scene changes that move effortlessly between London, Berlin, safe houses and interrogation rooms. Atmospheric lighting and an ominous soundscape create a permanent sense of unease, while the sparse design mirrors the emotional desolation of le Carré's world, where trust is always provisional and every conversation conceals another agenda. The creative team includes set and costume designer Max Jones, lighting design by Azusa Ono, sound design by Elizabeth Purnell, composition by Paul Englishby, and movement direction by Lucy Cullingford. The supporting company is uniformly strong, particularly in portraying the shifting allegiances that define the narrative. Gráinne Dromgoole gives an assured performance as Liz Gold, the quietly compassionate librarian who becomes entwined in Leamas's mission, provides the play with its emotional centre, reminding us that ordinary humanity is often collateral damage in the games played by governments. George Smiley, hovering discreetly on the edges of events, becomes an unsettling reminder that even the most decent figures in this world are capable of extraordinary compromise. The cast are completed by Jeff D’Sangalang, Melody Chikakane Brown, Eddie Toll, Jonny Burman, Jo Servi, Peter Losasso, Clara Wessely, Nicholas Murchie, Tony Turner and James Burman. David Eldridge's adaptation skilfully condenses a complex novel without sacrificing its intellectual weight. While some of the intricate espionage mechanics inevitably move at speed, the essential themes remain intact: the corrosive effects of deception, the moral bankruptcy of ideological warfare, and the terrible personal cost of treating human beings as expendable assets. What lingers long after the curtain falls is not the mechanics of espionage but the profound sadness at the heart of the story. In le Carré's universe there are no clean victories, only damaged survivors and compromised ideals. This production honours that bleak vision with intelligence and restraint. The result is an absorbing evening of theatre that values atmosphere and character over spectacle. It is tense, sophisticated and emotionally resonant, anchored by Ralf Little's quietly compelling performance and directed with admirable confidence. More than 60 years after its publication, The Spy Who Came In From The Cold remains a chilling reminder that the greatest casualties of espionage are often truth and humanity themselves.
