An elderly couple were left feeling “angry” after the “disgraceful” and “disrespectful” behaviour of football fans on a train. Mr and Mrs Parker caught a train from Southampton Central to Three Bridges on Saturday, August 8, when they encountered a group of Portsmouth FC fans travelling to watch their 3-1 loss to West Ham. The couple described how after catching a connecting train at 8.47am from Havant the group of fans began becoming increasingly drunk and “disrespectful” to passengers and the train carriage. Read more Mr Parker said: “Along the journey to Three Bridges they were continually drinking, not just beer they had spirits they had been pouring into coke and some cocktails, I think they said buzzball on them. “They all got on with carrier bags full of beer and other, lots of supporters getting on the train were loaded with alcohol. “The behaviour in the carriage was disgraceful, disrespectful, I have to say I have never ever experienced behaviour like it, there was no respect for carriage, no respect for people around them. “They were opening their beer bottles using the roof, they littered the whole carriage with their mess. “Their behaviour got worse and worse and the language was awful.” Mrs Parker at one point during the journey told off the group of hooligans but was met with a wave of jeers and laughter from the group. She said: “I wasn’t frightened, I was angry at the total disrespect these people had for the train to mess it in such a way and disrespect it and the other passengers. “I wouldn’t have wanted to go in and clean that.” The couple described seeing one member in the group snorting something which they believed to be cocaine and another making a racist comment about the trains guard. According to Mr and Mrs Parker the group also boasted about not paying for a ticket on the service. A British Transport Police spokesperson said: “At 10.13am on 8 August we received reports of anti-social behaviour on board a train travelling towards Three Bridges. “Anyone with any information is asked to contact British Transport Police by texting 61016, quoting reference 181 of 8 August.” They added that the BTP have a zero-tolerance approach to offensive behaviour and reminded football fans to respect their fellow passengers. A spokesperson for Southern said: "We feel for this couple and neither they nor any of the other passengers on board should have had to endure such appalling behaviour. "Our railway plays an important role in moving the thousands of football supporters who use our services every season, and the overwhelming majority of journeys pass without issue. Fans have every right to enjoy their day out, but this should not come at the expense of other passengers or railway colleagues. "Trains are shared spaces and passengers should treat them, and the people around, with respect."
