Ученицы школы Belle Vue Girls' Academy победили в конкурсе будущего Брэдфорда

A VISION for Bradford’s future cityscape has taken centre stage, imagined through the eyes of young people. Year 9 pupils from Belle Vue Girls' Academy and Carlton Bolling School earned top honours in the first Bradford Futures Challenge, a STEM-focused competition that invited students to imagine what Bradford could look like in 100 years. The initiative, developed by the Bradford Council Building Supply Chain Group with partners including Balfour Beatty, Amey, AECOM, and Robertson, placed the proposed Southern Gateway development at the heart of each team’s concept. Councillor Andrew Judson, Bradford Council’s executive member for economy, regeneration and planning, said: "It has been inspiring to see the enthusiasm and ambition demonstrated by the students taking part in the Bradford Futures Challenge. "The creativity and innovation shown by all the finalists was, quite frankly, inspiring. "The ideas presented today show how thoughtfully young people are thinking about the future of their city and the role they can play in shaping it." Over several months, participants worked with industry mentors to develop their ideas, presenting them through Minecraft Education models, physical prototypes made from sustainable materials, vlogs, and formal presentations. The competition aimed to encourage students to consider careers in science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM), and to develop skills in creativity, teamwork, and communication. This year’s theme focused on sustainability and community, asking students to design concepts that addressed environmental challenges while improving quality of life. Belle Vue Girls' Academy was named overall winner, receiving a £250 voucher, certificates, and goody bags sponsored by 1Energy and ThermaMech. Carlton Bolling School took second place and earned the opportunity to visit a live Balfour Beatty construction project. Judges commended the students’ critical thinking and vision for the city. Their ideas included renewable energy solutions, low-carbon transport, sustainable housing, green jobs, and biodiversity. Councillor Judson said: "Initiatives like this are invaluable because they bring together education, industry, and local government to help develop future skills, spark innovation, and encourage young people to consider careers in STEM and the built environment. "As we continue to explore opportunities such as the Southern Gateway, it is important that we listen to the aspirations of the next generation and empower them to help build Bradford's future."
