Filipino photographer, artist and storyteller Geloy Concepcion is taking his handwritten affirmations from the page to everyday clothing through Uniqlo Philippines’ “Notes to Self” Re.Uniqlo Embroidery Collection. The collaboration transforms five of his personal reminders into embroidered messages that customers can have stitched onto select Uniqlo LifeWear pieces. The collection was launched at the flagship store on Aug. 8 and will be rolled out to additional stores. For Concepcion, the project grew from his long-standing interest in creating artwork that could accompany people in their everyday lives. “I made five notes to self because that’s the name of the collection, ‘Notes to Self.’ For me, it’s a reminder, an everyday reminder,” he said at the launch. Concepcion said he had been exploring ways to make his artwork more personal and accessible, allowing people to carry his messages with them rather than simply view them in a traditional art setting. “It’s something you bring with you every day. That’s really the concept behind this campaign,” he said. The five messages featured in the collection are “I’ve got too much love for one life,” “Dream a little more, my friend,” “I hope you choose your own happiness,” “Don’t let the hard days win” and “Learn to take up space and be louder.” Daily affirmations Among the pieces, Concepcion said “Don’t let the hard days win” and “Dream a little more, my friend” are particularly meaningful because they reflect the words he tells himself. “‘Don’t let the hard days win’ is actually one of my favorites. These are also lines I say to myself. Before I go out, I tell myself, ‘You can do it,’” he said. He also explained why “Dream a little more, my friend” resonates with him. “Sometimes we limit ourselves. We think maybe this is as far as my dreams can go, this is my limit. So whenever I have something to do, I tell myself, ‘Dream a little more,’” Concepcion said. The collaboration also carries a personal significance for the artist who is a regular Uniqlo customer. “Even before this collaboration, their clothes were already what I usually wore,” Concepcion shared. “They reached out to me, and it just happened at the right time because I had been wanting to explore ways to transform and channel my work,” he said. The Re.Uniqlo embroidery service allows customers to bring in a well-loved Uniqlo LifeWear item or purchase a new one in-store, select one of the five messages. Each embroidery design costs P500. Customers can then leave their items at the Re.Uniqlo counter after payment and claim them once the embroidery is completed. Concepcion encouraged those interested in the collection to experience the customization process in person. The artist also sees the project as a natural extension of his practice, which is known for handwritten reflections centered on hope, self-compassion and connection. Rather than being confined to a photograph or screen, his words can now become part of the clothes people wear as they go about their daily lives. The “Notes to Self” Re.Uniqlo Embroidery Collection is available at the Uniqlo Manila Global Flagship Store, Uniqlo BGC High Street, Uniqlo SM Mall of Asia, Uniqlo Ayala Center Cebu and Uniqlo Davao Roadside Store.
