Readers often ask how FE&S selects its Dealer Sales Reps of the Month and, ultimately, its DSR of the Year. Allow me to explain. Over the years we have refined the process with the goal of maintaining a merit-based judging system that recognizes excellence without undue influence. The process begins when readers recommend DSRs they believe are doing outstanding work. These DSRs must meet baseline criteria that includes having been with their current company for more than one year, currently serving in an outside sales role, being seen as a resource by peers and adding value to both the customer and supply chain relationships. These nominations most often come from dealers, but we welcome input from every part of our readership, including operators, consultants, manufacturers’ reps and service agents, among others. From here, candidates are vetted by our editorial staff, who reach out to those who regularly interact with the DSR nominees as they go about their jobs. Once the DSR of the Month selection has been made, we interview, edit and publish a Q&A-style story about them. (You can meet the August DSR of the month, Ben Caprara, on page 77.) The 12 DSR of the Month winners of a particular calendar year automatically become the candidates for FE&S DSR of the Year Award. I get personally involved at this point, interviewing each DSR of the Year candidate myself and reading all the recommendation letters submitted on their behalf. I feel a real kinship with them because, prior to entering the publishing arena, I spent 15 years of my career as a DSR. Salvajor, the sponsor of the DSR of the Month and DSR of the Year Awards, flies all the candidates into Chicago for two nights around the time of the National Restaurant Association Show in May. DSRs participate in a focus group discussion the morning before learning who the winner is during our FE&S Dealer of the Year & All-Industry Awards Gala. As you might expect, it’s quite difficult to select the DSR of the Year winner from so many highly qualified candidates. But generally speaking, as we work through this long process, a clear winner emerges. Such is the case with our FE&S 2026 DSR of the Year, Jesse Durham.
