Uganda: Umsc Warns Muslim Clerics Against Misusing Social Media
The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council has warned Muslim clerics against misusing religious knowledge and social media platforms to spread messages without considering their context and potential impact on audiences.
Sheikh Juma Bakhit Cucu, UMSC Secretary for Education, said platforms such as TikTok and WhatsApp had expanded the reach of religious teachings but also created opportunities for some preachers to misuse their platforms.
"Even if the hadith you are quoting is Sahih--authentic--but what is the circumstance that you are relating to that hadith?" Sheikh Cucu said.
He urged Islamic scholars and preachers to exercise wisdom when delivering sensitive religious messages, saying the manner in which teachings are communicated can influence how people perceive Islam.

"Even if you are telling somebody something touchy, say it properly, say it wisely," he said.
Sheikh Cucu made the remarks during a Friday sermon at Makerere University Business School on September 4, 2026.
He also challenged Muslims to deepen their relationship with Allah through knowledge, worship, prayer and continuous repentance, saying religious knowledge should translate into practice.
"Many follow what they don't know and many know what they don't follow," he said.
Sheikh Cucu said acquiring knowledge should be the starting point for Muslims seeking to strengthen their relationship with Allah, while urging believers not to become excessively attached to worldly possessions.
He also encouraged Muslims to continually seek Allah's guidance, saying a good beginning in life does not necessarily guarantee a good ending.
"You may start the journey well, but not everything, not every good start makes a good ending," he said.
Sheikh Cucu described worship as an expression of love and gratitude to Allah, urging Muslims to approach prayer as an opportunity to seek forgiveness, guidance, lawful provision and help in dealing responsibly with others.
"Ibadah is passion. Ibadah is love for Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. You rush to pray to Allah, to thank Him for what He has done to you," he said.
He reminded Muslims that worldly life is part of a wider spiritual journey and urged them to balance the pursuit of material needs with preparation for the hereafter.
