← Back to News ArtistDirect News Caroline Bienstock, Former President and CEO of Carlin Music, Dies at 68 September 9, 2026 By ArtistDirect News Team In a quiet loss for the music world, Caroline Bienstock, the former president and chief executive officer of Carlin Music, passed away in New York City on September 1, 2026 after a prolonged illness. She was 68. Bienstock steered Carlin Music, an independent publisher founded by her father, Freddy Bienstock, until its 2017 sale to Round Hill Music for roughly $250 million. Under her leadership, the catalog grew to more than 80,000 titles, including enduring classics such as “What A Wonderful World,” “Sea of Love,” “Spanish Harlem,” “Happy Together,” “Nashville Cats,” “Viva Las Vegas,” “When the Saints Go Marching In,” “Save the Last Dance for Me,” “Monster Mash,” “Good Lovin’,” and “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” Carlin’s headquarters occupied a historic space in the Brill Building, with satellite offices in Nashville, London, and Paris. A 2016 Billboard profile noted that the company’s royalty system served 8,500 songwriters and that its catalog had surpassed 80,000 titles. Born in 1958, Bienstock was the daughter of two influential music‑industry leaders. Her mother, Mariam Bienstock, co‑founded Atlantic Records and served as an executive, while her father purchased the publishing firm that would become Carlin Music in 1966 and renamed it after his then‑eight‑year‑old daughter. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Yale College, a law degree from Boston University, and an MBA from the Wharton School. Her career began in law and at Goldman Sachs before she joined Carlin in the late 1980s. By 1993 she had become the company’s chief financial officer and chief operating officer, and she was promoted to president in 1998. In 2016 she told Billboard that Carlin’s growth strategy focused on “expanding into new territories by buying catalogs in them,” and she emphasized that her decisions were guided by the family’s interests and the catalog’s integrity, not nostalgia. Beyond her executive role, Bienstock sat on the boards of the National Music Publishers Association (NMPA), the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), the American Independent Music Publishers (AIMP), and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 2017 she received the Abe Olman Publisher Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Bienstock’s family survived her. She was married to Douglas Rodrigues and had children, grandchildren, and children‑in‑law. Her brother, Robert Bienstock, also held an executive position at Carlin Music. The family has requested that donations be made to the ALS Association and/or Target ALS in her honor. Her death marks the loss of a pivotal figure in independent music publishing. Bienstock’s stewardship preserved and expanded a catalog that spans multiple generations of popular music, and her oversight of Carlin’s transition to Round Hill ensured the company’s legacy would endure under new ownership. Carlin Music’s catalog remains one of the largest independent holdings in the United States, and its songs continue to be licensed for film, television, advertising, and streaming. The sale to Round Hill was completed in late 2017, and the catalog remains an active part of Round Hill’s publishing portfolio. Bienstock’s career illustrates the influence of family legacy in the music business. Her mother’s role at Atlantic Records and her father’s founding of Carlin Music provided a foundation she expanded through strategic acquisitions and global expansion. Industry peers have highlighted her professionalism, strategic vision, and commitment to supporting songwriters. The ALS Association and Target ALS have received the family’s donation request, and the music community has expressed condolences through statements on social media and in industry publications. The legacy of Caroline Bienstock will endure through the catalog she helped build and the industry standards she helped shape. Her passing is a significant moment for independent music publishing and for the broader music business community.
