В Университете Святого Павла в Кении открыта программа PhD по коммуникациям

St Paul’s University in Limuru has unveiled a PhD in Communication Studies programme, opening a new pathway for scholars seeking to advance their knowledge and research in communication, journalism, public relations and related fields. The programme, which will be offered on both a full-time and part-time basis, was launched on Wednesday, August 26, at the university’s Limuru main campus. The launch coincided with the opening of the three-day 16th East Africa Communication Association (EACA) Conference 2026, which brings together journalism, media and communication scholars, researchers, postgraduate students, industry practitioners and digital creatives from more than 14 countries. The conference is themed Reimagining communication in Africa: AI, media innovation and global collaboration, with delegates exploring how emerging technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence, are reshaping communication and how Africa can play a greater role in driving innovation while protecting its values and interests. The new doctoral programme is designed to strengthen advanced research and knowledge production in communication studies. It will be delivered using a blended mode of learning and will take a minimum of three years and a maximum of six years to complete, with any extension requiring approval from the university Senate. Speaking during the launch, programme leader Dr Winnie Ndeta said the PhD comprises 10 units to be completed within 36 months under the trimester system. The programme also provides flexibility for students who may not be able to attend campus regularly. “Our exams are also administered online, so you don't have to come here to do your exams; you just have to ensure that you log into the portals and access all the information,” Ndeta said. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Communication Studies, Public Relations, Journalism, Development Communication, Media Studies or Educational Communication from a recognised institution. Holders of Master’s degrees in relevant social sciences may also qualify, subject to recommendation by the School Postgraduate Studies Committee (SPSC) and approval by the Senate. The launch comes as universities increasingly seek to expand postgraduate research and equip scholars to respond to rapid changes in the communication industry, including the growing influence of AI and digital media. Approval of a PhD programme in Kenya involves development and review of the curriculum, institutional approval through the university Senate and accreditation by the Commission for University Education (CUE). The regulator assesses, among other areas, an institution’s academic staff, facilities, library resources and financial capacity before granting approval. Through the new programme, St Paul’s University seeks to deepen research and knowledge production in communication while preparing scholars to contribute to the evolving media and communication landscape in Africa.
