GET THE LATEST ISSUE OF GQ Nikki’s possession blurs the line between devotion and destruction. Image: Instagram: @obsessionthemovie After Obsession made over $500M worldwide, it was worth watching again. The story follows Bear, who uses a one-wish willow to make Nikki Freeman fall in love with him. However, the movie takes a dark turn when Nikki becomes overly obsessed with Bear to the point where she cannot leave him alone. The movie slowly shows us how dangerous love can be when it becomes extremely obsessive. Obsession is categorised as a horror, so there are a few moments when things get bloody. Nikki brutally kills Sarah Harper and Ian — all because of Bear, who wished for her to love him more than anyone else in the whole world. When you think about it, the horror shows us the extreme side of love and just how dark it can get. It creates a mirror that reflects the extent to which people are willing to go in order to find love (which we see through Bear) and what people are willing to do to keep love (which we see through Nikki). Bear’s desire for love sets off a fatal chain reaction in Obsession. Image: Instagram: @ obsessionthemovie During the beginning stages of the movie, we see Bear going through Nikki's Instagram account just before he gets a call from her. Looking back now, it made me think: what if the movie was trying to show us something else? It highlights the obsessive nature of toxic love—and just maybe, as a society, it is something that we have completely normalised in the digital age. Bear’s initial refusal to accept non-reciprocal feelings drives the entire tragedy. As you watch the movie, it is easy to see Nikki as the villain in the story since she is the one who is possessed. But in reality, Bear — who wished for this to happen—was so obsessed with Nikki, whom he knew did not have the same feelings for him, that he was willing to do anything for her love and adoration. When Bear finally came to his senses and figured out this was not what he wanted, he went on to overdose in order to escape the reality that he had created for himself. With his friends all dead, Bear understood that since nobody else could reverse his wish now, the easiest thing was to take his own life.
