Песни в клубе напоминают о бывшей: как музыкальный плейлист разрушает попытку забыться

GET THE LATEST ISSUE OF GQ Trying to dance away an ex on a Friday night is harder than it looks. Image: Pexels We have all been there. Your heart is in pieces, but your mates are at the door, fully convinced that a night out is the ultimate cure. You are doing your best to recover from a recent breakup, yet real healing feels entirely out of reach. Now it is Friday night, and you have dragged yourself out of bed, forced yourself into a decent outfit, and agreed to join them at the club — all in the desperate hope of forgetting about your ex. As you get ready, it only feels right to blast a bit of Future. Your track of choice is Bitches Love Me, featuring Lil Wayne and Drake. You stand in front of the mirror, convinced that this exact song will shift your mindset and pull you into the mood for a proper night out. You arrive at the club and the music is booming through the speakers. On the surface, it feels like a solid vibe. The only real issue is the DJ. It is not that the music is bad; the problem is the track selection. As you weave through the crowd towards the bar to order a round of shots, Cassie’s Me & U echoes across the dance floor. Your ex absolutely loved this track, and in an instant, your mind floods with thoughts of her. Heartbroken in the middle of a crowded club, your entire mood shifts. You try to keep dancing, but you simply cannot shake her from your thoughts. Desperate to clear your head, you slip away to the toilets. You find yourself staring blankly into the bathroom mirror. It is a familiar ritual — looking at your own drunk reflection and questioning your life choices — except tonight, your regrets belong to just one person. As you stare into the mirror, the lyrics to Drake’s White Bone echo in your mind: "Who understands you like me? Nobody truly knows. You say that there is nothing for you here and that you should go." Before you know it, the clock strikes two in the morning, and you are standing on the edge of a terrible decision: texting her. You reach into your pocket and pull out your phone, just as the DJ drops 3am by Loe Shimmy and Don Toliver. The lyrics ring around the room: "I know just know what you be doing in here, you call me whenever you’re horny." The words hit a bit too close to home. You hesitate, take a breath, and slide the phone back into your pocket. An hour later, the venue is beginning to clear out, and you are more than ready to call it a night. Your friends are already whispering about an after-party at a second location, but you know better. You are determined to head home and retreat into your own space. Before you step out into the cool night air, the DJ spins one last track: Dancers Remorse (Sin City) by Tory Lanez. "And when that money falls down. You’d rather be doing nothing else but stripping." What was supposed to be a cathartic night of release turned into a relentless reminder of your ex, who worked as a dancer. The DJ's soundtrack for the evening certainly did not do you any favours.
