20 SIM Cards Intercepted at Zomba Central Prison Hidden in Potatoes Published on September 4, 2026 at 3:45 PM by [email protected] Security officers at Zomba Central Prison have intercepted 20 SIM cards concealed inside boiled Irish potatoes during routine screening at the facility. The SIM cards were allegedly hidden in four bundles of food brought by visitor Sphiwe Ngwira for inmates Yusuf Kankosya and Esau Billy. According to prison authorities, the contraband was detected by a scanner installed at the prison to prevent the smuggling of prohibited items. Gaoler Tamara Gondwe reportedly noticed an anomaly during the initial scan and ordered a second scan. A subsequent manual search confirmed the presence of the 20 SIM cards concealed inside the potatoes. The confiscated items have since been handed over to relevant authorities for further investigations. Officer-in-Charge of Zomba Central Prison, Deputy Commissioner of Prisons Owen Mahalawipha Levi, commended the officers for their alertness and vigilance. Levi has also warned visitors against attempting to smuggle prohibited items into the prison, saying those caught will face the law. Prison records show that Kankosya and Billy are serving 24-year prison sentences for entering a protected area with a weapon and possession of endangered species, respectively.
