20 Discontinued Foods That Defined Our Childhoods (And Deserve To Come Back)
Nostalgia really hits hard. The ‘90s were some of my most formative years, and with that came some peak pop culture. I was a student of Clarissa Explains It All, a proponent of girl power, and a caretaker to my demanding Tamagotchi. And throughout it all, I was snacking on some of the most iconic treats the United States has ever seen.
Sadly, a lot of the childhood snacks and drinks we grew up with have since fallen victim to the dreaded discontinuation. They may be gone, but they are never forgotten. Here are some of the foods and beverages of yesteryear I’d give my right arm —or, more appropriately, my Skip-It—to enjoy just one more time.
Klondike Choco Taco
Also known as the original ice cream taco, Klondike’s Choco Taco was a fan favorite from the moment it debuted in 1984. The treat featured a waffle cone taco shell filled with vanilla ice cream and fudge, then topped with peanuts and a milk chocolate coating.
Unfortunately, Klondike discontinued it in 2022, but other brands have since tapped into the obvious demand for its return. Just last year, Salt & Straw teamed up with Taco Bell on a limited-time TexMex-inspired version of the treat.
Kudos Bars
Kudos Bars were essentially candy bars disguised as granola bars. Loaded with chocolate and candy, they quickly became every kid’s grab-and-go favorite after Mars introduced them in 1986. They began disappearing from store shelves in the 2010s before being officially discontinued in 2017.
Luckily, you can make our copycat Kudos Bars that are even better than the real thing.
Doritos 3D
While everyone knows and loves Doritos, the brand’s 3D version stole plenty of kids’ hearts when it debuted in 1998. The puffed-up chips came in flavors like Nacho Cheese, Zesty Ranch, and Jalapeño Cheddar before the company phased them out in the early 2000s.
Doritos revived the concept in 2020 with Doritos 3D Crunch and two new flavors. That version has since disappeared from U.S. shelves, though versions of the original snack are still available in Mexico.
SnackWell’s
These cookie cakes were all the rage in the ’90s. SnackWell’s first hit shelves in 1992 and became synonymous with the decade’s fat-free food craze. The brand changed hands over the years before eventually being discontinued in 2022.
Shark Bites
If you had these in your pantry as a child, you know how much the white Shark Bite slapped. Fruit Corners introduced the fruit snack under General Mills in 1988.
The recipe changed over the years, including a move away from artificial colors and flavors, and the fan-favorite Great White gummy eventually disappeared. The beloved children’s snack was later phased out altogether.
P.B. Crisps
Planters is known today for all sorts of nut mixes, but back in 1992, the brand introduced P.B. Crisps, a peanut-shaped snack with varieties including peanut butter, chocolate, and peanut butter and jelly.
Sadly, P.B. Crisps never made it out of the decade. That hasn’t stopped the snack from developing a cult following, complete with an online petition campaigning for its return.
Fruitopia
If anything screams nostalgia, it’s the Fruitopia typeface. A product of Coca-Cola’s Minute Maid brand, Fruitopia launched in 1994 to compete with drinks from brands like Snapple and SoBe.
After sales struggled in the United States, Coca-Cola phased out the standalone Fruitopia line here in 2003. Fortunately, the brand has lived on in Canada.

Carnation Breakfast Bars
I truly miss the days when a candy bar could pass for breakfast. Carnation Breakfast Bar launched in the mid-1970s as an easy, grab-and-go morning option. Made with granola and covered in chocolate, popular flavors included chocolate chip and peanut butter.
Unfortunately, they disappeared by the late ’90s.
Rice Krispie Treats Cereal
Everyone knows and loves Rice Krispies cereal. Not only is it good on its own, but it’s also the basis for Rice Krispie Treats. Naturally, that dessert eventually inspired its own cereal. Rice Krispies Treats cereal was introduced in 1993, but after Kellogg’s reformulated its recipe years later, consumer demand fell and the beloved version eventually disappeared from shelves.
Sprinkle Spangles
General Mills introduced this sugar cookie-flavored cereal in 1993. If you remember eating it, congratulations—you had a very small window. Sprinkle Spangles was discontinued the following year due to poor sales and divisive customer feedback.
Dannon Sprinkl'ins
In 1992, Dannon released a yogurt marketed toward kids that came with a packet of sprinkles to—you guessed it —sprinkle into your yogurt. The treat was phased out in the early 2000s, but Dannon temporarily brought it back under its YoCrunch brand in 2013. Sadly, that revival didn’t last either.
Cheese Nips
Cheese Nips, originally called Cheese-Nips, came to market in 1955 under Nabisco as a competitor to Cheez-Its. The cheesy crackers were discontinued in the U.S. in 2020, but you can still find them in Canada as Christie Ritz Cheese Nibs.
Fruit String Thing
This fun-to-eat fruit snack debuted in 1994 and turned the whole "don't play with your food" rule on its head. Sadly, Fruit String Thing was discontinued by 2002.
Jell-O Pudding Pops
If you ask me, no childhood was truly complete unless you had a box of these stashed in your freezer.
Jell-O Pudding Pops originated in the late ’70s under General Foods, but despite their popularity, the original treats eventually disappeared. Popsicle revived them in 2004 with a different shape and recipe, but that version was phased out around 2011.
Squeezeit
This fun, fruity drink came in numerous flavors and hit store shelves in 1985. General Mills discontinued Squeezit in 2001, though the beverage made a brief comeback in the mid-2000s (and later in the 2010s) before disappearing forever.
Nesquik Cereal
Chocolate milk lovers couldn’t get enough of this cereal. Nestlé debuted it in 1999, with chocolate cereal pieces that turned the milk in your bowl chocolatey as you ate. Sadly, Nesquik Cereal was discontinued in the United States in 2012, though it remains available in other countries.
Ritz Bitz S’mores
Thankfully, Ritz Bitz are still readily available, but in the early 2000s, we were also blessed with a sweet version: Ritz Bitz S’mores. The mini sandwich crackers eventually disappeared and were fully discontinued in 2016. The brand briefly brought them back for National S’mores Day in 2022, so here’s hoping they make a full-on comeback soon.
Tab Soda
Coca-Cola's Tab was a popular diet soda with a huge following. It launched in 1963 and was discontinued in 2020. Much like P.B. Crisps, fans refused to let it go quietly, and a Change.org petition calling for Tab’s return has collected thousands of signatures.
Munch ‘Ems
Keebler launched Munch ’Ems in 1991. Similar to Goldfish, these baked, chip-like crackers came in flavors including Original, Cheddar, Sour Cream & Onion, and Mesquite BBQ. Unfortunately for those of us who loved them, Munch ’Ems were discontinued in the early 2000s.
Philadelphia Cheesecake Snack Bars
Cheesecake on-the-go? What could be better? Kraft introduced Philadelphia Cheesecake Snack Bars in 1999, with multiple flavors of the individually packaged dessert. They gained plenty of fans but were discontinued in the early 2000s because of manufacturing and production difficulties.
