Зейнеп Сонмез выиграла Открытый турнир Мерида и стала первой турецкой теннисисткой, завоевавшей титул WTA с 2016 года

This was not just a title. It was a line in the sand. Zeynep Sonmez’s 2024 Merida Open win made her the first Turkish player to win a WTA Tour singles title since 2016, and that is the sort of breakthrough that changes how a career is viewed overnight. For a player who was born on April 30, 2002 and turned professional in 2016, this is the reward for patience rather than hype. Sonmez did not arrive with the noise of a can’t-miss junior prodigy. Her rise has been slower, steadier and more convincing than that, built through gradual progress until the results finally demanded attention. The headline number is the one that matters most: one title, and a historic one at that. In a country where tennis is still fighting for the kind of visibility enjoyed by more established sporting powers, winning the Merida Open for her first WTA singles title gave Turkiye a genuine landmark moment. It also gave Sonmez a platform far bigger than a single tournament trophy. A breakthrough built on patience Sonmez’s story is especially striking because it has not followed the usual script. She attended the WTA Finals in Istanbul as a child between 2011 and 2013, which makes this rise feel even more complete. The sport that once looked distant and glamorous from the stands is now the one she is actively reshaping from the inside. That matters because this kind of progress is rarely accidental. She first made the WTA Top 100 in 2024, then began 2026 at No. 110. By the end of a strong Australian Open, she had climbed to No. 67. In May 2026 she reached No. 59 and broke Cagla Buyukakcay’s national ranking record, before rising again to a career-best No. 48. Those numbers tell you what the title already suggests: this is not a brief flash. It is momentum. It is the sort of ranking climb that turns a one-off winner into a player others start treating with respect. Why this milestone matters At 5-foot-7, or 1.70 meters, Sonmez is not winning by physical intimidation or by living off one overpowering weapon. The value is in the accumulation: 28 wins, 19 losses in the relevant stretch, rising belief, and a growing place in the WTA conversation. That is how a genuine contender starts to form. Her career prize money, listed at $2,158,969 on August 31, 2026, is another marker of the same thing. The money follows the results, and the results have finally begun to match the promise. For a player who once looked like a development project, she now looks like part of the next conversation. The big point is simple enough. Sonmez’s Merida Open victory was not only a personal breakthrough. It was a national one. It ended an eight-year wait for a Turkish WTA Tour singles champion and gave Turkiye a player whose rise is being written in real time. That is how history tends to begin: not with a roar, but with a first title that forces everyone to pay attention.
