Комментатор Jeff Brantley в прямом эфире вспомнил случай, когда Томми Фам ударил игрока по голове из-за спора о фэнтези-футболе

Some broadcast moments are fleeting, but this one landed because it connected a live baseball telecast to a memory that had already made Tommy Pham a familiar name in Cincinnati. During the fourth inning of NBC's Sunday Night Baseball broadcast of the Reds-Cubs series finale in Chicago, Jason Benetti brought up fantasy football drafts in clubhouses around Major League Baseball, and Jeff Brantley immediately answered with a Tommy Pham joke. “If you don't, ask Tommy Pham,” Brantley said, turning a casual booth exchange into a clear callback. The line worked because the reference was obvious to viewers who remember why Pham became such a notable figure for Reds fans in the first place: before a game at Great American Ball Park, he slapped then-Giants outfielder Joc Pederson over a disagreement about stashing a player on IR in a fantasy football league. Why the joke hit so easily Brantley did not need to explain the backstory, because the incident already sits in the orbit of Pham's public image. That is part of what made the remark resonate. It was not just a throwaway laugh line; it was a reminder that some players become part of baseball's broader conversation for reasons that go beyond the box score. Brantley added that he had seen it happen himself. “I watched that happen, by the way,” he said, explaining that he was in the booth when Joc Pederson jogged out. He said he initially thought Pederson was simply heading over to say hello. “No. Whacked right in the head! Oh man!” Brantley recalled. The timing also mattered. The conversation came as football season was approaching, which made fantasy football a natural topic for a baseball broadcast. But Pham's name gave the exchange extra weight, because he had already become shorthand for one of baseball's stranger clubhouse stories. Pham has also been back in the conversation recently after trading barbs on social media with Reds outfielder Dane Myers, which only kept his profile in front of Cincinnati fans. So when Brantley made the joke on Sunday Night Baseball, it was more than a punchline. It was a neat example of how one incident can follow a player from season to season, and even from one sport's calendar into another's. That is the bigger takeaway here. The broadcast was about a game in Chicago, but the joke reminded viewers that Tommy Pham's name still carries a very specific kind of relevance in baseball circles: not just as a player, but as the central figure in a story that people remember when fantasy football comes up in a clubhouse.
