Мисти Коупленд представила новый роман о здоровой конкуренции в искусстве

Misty Copeland says the Firebird has shaped her career, and she is using Firebird Waltz to push a different model of artistic competition. In an interview with Black Girl Nerds, she said Star Fire Academy was written to show young artists that ambition does not have to come at someone else’s expense. Copeland called the Firebird “a Russian folk tale that became a ballet that has been really meaningful to me throughout my career.” She described it as “such a powerful symbol of transformation, resilience, imagination; becoming something bigger than you maybe thought you could be,” adding that the image has stayed with her through ballet. Josie at Star Fire Academy Josie is twelve years old and has been accepted into the prestigious Star Fire Academy. In Firebird Waltz, she has to learn to believe in herself and her art while dark forces are at bay, and she leans on the magical Firebird plus her fellow Star Fire peers and mentors to keep her passion alive. That setup gives the story a clear business-of-the-arts logic: talent is not presented as a solo contest. Copeland said she experienced support from mentors, teachers, coaches, peers, and people around her while growing up and during her professional career, and she used that experience as the story’s operating model. Healthy rivalry in arts Copeland said, “I’ve just always thought, not just dancers, but artists in general, are superheroes.” She also said, “Competition is a reality in ballet and in the arts, but I think there’s a way to experience it in a healthy way.” That is the friction inside the book: the arts reward excellence, yet repeated stories about toxic rivalry can flatten how artists actually work together. She added, “I think that we do the arts and ballet such a disservice by repeating this trope.” Her answer is Star Fire Academy, where “there’s room for different voices and bodies and perspectives,” and where ambitious young people do not have to rise by diminishing the people around them. American Ballet Theater roots Copeland’s perspective carries weight because she was the first Black woman to be promoted to principal dancer at the American Ballet Theater. That history gives her framing of Firebird Waltz extra force: she is not talking about competition in the abstract, but from a career shaped by the gatekeeping and support systems that determine who gets to stay in the room. For readers, the practical takeaway is simple. Firebird Waltz is not just another fantasy title using the Firebird image; it is Copeland’s argument that young artists can be ambitious, elite, and collaborative at the same time. How much of Josie and Star Fire Academy comes from Copeland’s own experience is the part she leaves for the page.
