WWE‘s Cody Rhodes recalled thinking he was going to die in a ‘full-blooded’ bus crash.
During his recent conversation with Santino Marella on his What Do You Wanna Talk About? podcast, Cody Rhodes recalled a bus crash they were in back in the day.
“I think people need to know. You and I were in a bus crash before, an actual full-blooded bus crash. And I will describe these events, and everyone will classify them as a Cody-lie. No, I wish it was. Per the directive of Triple H, who said, ‘Hey, top guys aren’t the only ones who can get a bus. Why don’t you guys get a bus? But just split it, get three or four guys on there, get the fridge on there. You got your food. You can park it at the gym. No excuses.’ Honestly, it sounded like a good deal,” Rhodes began.
However, Cody Rhodes said they didn’t get a bus, but gome something more like a camper. The plan was to travel to Madison, Wisconsin, and the journey was in the middle of winter. Rhodes recalled the day starting great, as they went to the gym and loaded up the fridge with food. However, they had a driver who was not aware of the hectic wrestling travel schedule.
Cody Rhodes thought the bus was falling off a cliff
“So, we’re experiencing the bus for the first time. We’re doing our thing, and everyone finally gets to the point where they’re tired. They get in these bunks, and I feel like I just got in the bunk. The bus is going, and I felt this [shake]. I’m moving, and the next thing I heard was a crash. Something in the front lounge just broke, and the next thing I know, I feel the downshifting a little, and it’s grinding to a stop. In my heart, I thought, ‘Are we gonna fall off a cliff? Are we gonna fall off a bridge?’ Rhodes continued.
“As it’s grinding to a stop, you hear all this glass shatter. So I’m thinking, ‘My God, we’re gonna die.’ So the bus finally comes to a stop, and for 10 seconds, just nothing. I roll out and look into the front lounge; the door that blocked the bunks has been busted open. The fridge is completely tipped. It looks like it’s been turned upside down in an earthquake, and then I saw the bus driver sitting in the seat completely hunched over, and the full glass was shattered,” Rhodes continued.
“There was red on the glass, and I’m thinking, ‘He’s f*****g dead.’ He’s not moving. So I’m moving up there, and then all of a sudden, he just shoots up out of the chair, and he takes this big jug of water, and he puts it all over his head. He’s got glass in his eyes. He sits down, and he’s not saying anything, because I wanted to be like, ‘Hey man, what the f**k happened?’
Sheamus was also on the bus, and they eventually got to the WWE event
Cody Rhodes said the coach company, which WWE no longer uses, had been in business for 18 years at the time. They had only one crash, and the WWE superstars happened to be in it. He then realized they were driving through Chicago. He also recalled Santino Marella looking at the floor with the light from his phone, asking if anyone had a torch because he couldn’t find his contacts.
Cody Rhodes revealed that Sheamus was also on the bus and that former SmackDown General Manager Teddy Long missed the journey. “Me, you, and Sheamus, and Sheamus is all flustered, but he’s not really saying anything. So I finally called the cops, saying, ‘We’re on the side of the road, exit 17.”
The roadside assistance person, who came to their aid, offered to drive them to the rest stop. They left the driver to get attended to and went with the person. From there, Rhodes, Marella, and Sheamus got in a cab with their bags and found their way to Madison, Wisconsin, for the next WWE event. They also informed the coach company’s owner about the crash.
They got to the hotel Sheamus had booked for the previous day. The hotel people felt sorry for them and drove them in their van to another place to stay. As the investigation into the crash began, Cody Rhodes said the coach company’s owner offered him another bus for free to avoid a lawsuit. Santino Marella also learned something from the incident and had his contacts implanted in his eyes.
