Драматург Кейт Хонан представит психологический триллер «Далекий Солнце» в Дублинском Фринге 2026 года

Dublin Fringe 2026: Playwright Katie 'KT' Honan introduces her new play The Far Away Sun, a psychological thriller developed in collaboration with neuroscientists at the South East Technology University, designed to its audience into the fractured mind of its troubled protagonist... Have you ever wanted to hear inside someone else's mind? I have. Maybe that’s why I became an actor — the urge to dive into someone else’s inner world, and have a root around. Over the past five years, I started to write plays and suddenly found myself researching neuroscience, of all things. I was never academic in school, so was surprised by my draw to reading dense papers about brain structures. My fascination started when writing my new play The Far Away Sun, exploring the battle in the mind when man and monster live as one. After an earth-shattering event, the lead character’s memory and imagination start to collide, creating a terrifying forest that he now believes is his reality. I asked myself, how can this happen in a person’s mind? I learnt memory is not about the past, it is about the future. Because memory and imagination live in the same part of the brain, a structure called the hippocampus. And when we want to reach certain goals, targets or destinations, we imagine it ahead of us, which helps us on our path, but our imagination is made up of fragments of our memory, so what we have in our memory bank plays an important part in our future. My aim as a writer is to put a lens on the internal rhythms of a human, and share this with audiences in unique ways. Next, I delved into the senses. Because I wanted to create a sense for the audience that they are in the lead character’s mind. To bridge the gap between spectator and performer, creating a sensorially intensified theatrical experience. I wondered how might we see the lead character walking around his house, and we can hear inside is head? I then started exploring the use of a binaural head. A microphone that is shaped as a human head, so it is designed to pick up sound like we do. By recording the inner world of the character with this microphone we can immerse the audience inside his head, offering a 360-degree sound experience, through headphones. So, we watch him wake up, have his breakfast, watch telly, have a bath etc. He doesn’t speak, but the audience hears his running thoughts and memories, which eventually collide with imagination, pulling you into (what I hope is) a thrilling adventure. How I respond to situations, approach life, engage in relationships. Our brain is wired in ways from our past experiences and present environment - but what about our future? My aim as a writer is to put a lens on the internal rhythms of a human, and share this with audiences in unique ways. I am eager to hear feedback from audiences who come and put on their headphones at Dublin Fringe this September.
