В Калифорнии отреставрируют легендарную резиденцию Рэт Пэка на горе

High above Yucca Valley in California’s high desert, Rattlesnake Ranch belongs firmly to the second category. Composer Jimmy Van Heusen bought the secluded mountaintop in 1963, seeking the privacy that increasingly eluded Hollywood stars in nearby Palm Springs. What followed was a remarkable chapter in Rat Pack history, as the retreat became associated with Van Heusen’s close friends Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby, as well as visits from President John F. Kennedy. Today, after years of decline, the once-secret hideaway is being restored as a luxury rental, giving a new generation a glimpse into one of Hollywood’s most colourful desert escapes. Why Jimmy Van Heusen escaped Hollywood for Yucca Valley Van Heusen was far more than a composer living in the shadow of the stars he wrote for. A four-time Oscar winner, he created enduring songs including Come Fly with Me, Call Me Irresponsible and All the Way. According to the data on the official site, his professional and personal friendship with Frank Sinatra placed him firmly inside the world that would become synonymous with the Rat Pack. By the early 1960s, however, Palm Springs no longer offered the isolation that celebrities wanted. The desert resort had become so popular with Hollywood figures and tourists that privacy was increasingly difficult to find. Van Heusen went further into the high desert and chose a mountain overlooking Yucca Valley. The finished retreat became known variously as Scenic Mountain, JVH Ranch and, eventually, Rattlesnake Ranch. The setting was almost perfectly suited to the lifestyle Van Heusen had cultivated, isolated, difficult to stumble upon, and far removed from Hollywood's watchful eyes. The secluded mountain became a Rat Pack escape Rattlesnake Ranch soon developed a reputation considerably larger than its remote location. Sinatra was among Van Heusen's closest friends and collaborators, and the mountain became one of the places where members of the Hollywood set could disappear from public view. SFGATE visited the property during its restoration and describes the ranch as a place where Sinatra, Crosby and Kennedy were among the famous guests. The atmosphere was tied closely to the excesses associated with the Rat Pack era, with Van Heusen embracing a famously hard-living bachelor lifestyle. The ranch's isolation was part of its attraction. Unlike Palm Springs, no neighbouring homes were crowding the mountain. Guests could arrive, stay and party away from the photographers and Hollywood insiders who surrounded celebrities elsewhere. Van Heusen's connection to Sinatra was particularly important. His songs helped define the singer's catalogue, while Sinatra's former valet George Jacobs later portrayed Van Heusen as an influential figure in the singer's lifestyle as well as his professional circle. The composer became such a character in Yucca Valley that locals embraced him, and he was named honorary mayor in 1967, with actor Henry Fonda reportedly attending the ceremony. Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe. The story has long suggested that the president and Monroe had an encounter at the secluded property. Both had genuine connections to Van Heusen. His song High Hopes became Kennedy's 1960 campaign song, while Van Heusen composed music for Monroe's film Let's Make Love. Kennedy also definitely visited Van Heusen's Yucca Valley home, according to contemporary reports. But one crucial detail makes the famous story difficult to accept, Monroe died in 1962, while the house was not completed until 1963. The better-documented links between Kennedy and Monroe point elsewhere in the Palm Springs area. That has not stopped the legend from becoming part of the ranch's identity. The restored pool house now includes a bedroom inspired by Monroe, while another room pays tribute to Sinatra. The property effectively preserves both the history and mythology surrounding its most famous visitors. Van Heusen eventually left, and the ranch fell into disrepair The party years did not last forever. Van Heusen married Bobbe Brock in 1969, and the composer subsequently described a much quieter married life. He eventually sold his mountaintop retreat and returned to the Palm Springs area. The property later operated as the Scenic Mountain Club, including a restaurant, before eventually closing. For years, Rattlesnake Ranch sat largely abandoned. Thomas Cribb bought the property in 2006. By then, the main house was already in an uninhabitable condition, but the extraordinary views and complete privacy of the mountain convinced him that the place could have another life. Even in its rougher state, the property retained its pull. The pool house had been rented to visitors, and according to Cribb, it was booked more than 300 nights a year despite its rustic condition. Rattlesnake Ranch is being reborn as a luxury desert retreat The latest chapter is transforming the old celebrity hideaway into a carefully restored luxury property. The renovated pool house contains two bedrooms and two bathrooms and sleeps up to six people. Its design combines contemporary comforts with mid-century influences and archival photographs from Van Heusen's era. The original pool and barbecue pit have been retained, while the grounds now include a stone hot tub, sunken fire pit and a two-person swing overlooking Yucca Valley. The restoration is also deliberately preserving details that connect visitors to the ranch's past. According to the developers, the pool where Sinatra and Kennedy reportedly swam remains in place, allowing the property to retain physical links to its celebrity history. The main house is planned for a larger restoration, with four bedrooms and the return of Van Heusen's distinctive pink hot tub in the living room.Once completed, the entire mountain is expected to operate as a single rental for private stays, weddings and events. There is also a striking reminder of just how seriously Kennedy's security was taken. The property has two helicopter landing areas, with the second reportedly added after the Secret Service considered the original landing arrangement unsuitable. The main house also contained an extraordinary 37 telephone lines for the presidential visits. What remains at Rattlesnake Ranch, then, is more than an old Hollywood house. It is a physical reminder of an era when composers, singers, actors and political leaders could retreat into the desert and temporarily create a private world of their own. As the ranch moves from abandoned hideaway to restored luxury retreat, its greatest selling point remains unchanged from 1963, an entire mountain, far from everyone else.
