Карл Юнг выращивал кукурузу на своем швейцарском уединении

Psychologist Carl Jung is widely remembered for his work on the human mind, personality and the unconscious. But away from his books and theories, he also found comfort in a much simpler way of life. At his lakeside retreat in Switzerland, Swiss psychiatrist spent time doing everyday tasks, including growing maize, or corn. His connection with nature was an important part of the quiet life he chose at the retreat. Jung was a Swiss psychologist and psychiatrist who founded analytic psychology. His work developed partly in response to Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis and introduced ideas that later became influential in psychology. Among his well-known concepts are introverted and extraverted personality types, archetypes and the collective unconscious. While Jung spent years studying the human mind, his life at his Swiss retreat offered a very different setting. Away from the demands of his professional life, he chose to live simply and stay close to nature. His routine included growing his own food and carrying out basic household tasks. Carl Jung’s simple life at Bollingen Tower Carl Jung's famous lakeside retreat, known as Bollingen Tower, became an important part of his personal life. Located in Switzerland, the retreat gave him a place where he could step away from the noise of everyday life and spend time in solitude. His approach to living there was deliberately simple. Jung chose not to have electricity or running water at the retreat. Instead, he carried out many tasks himself. He chopped wood, pumped water and prepared meals over a fireplace. He also tended a maize field, making gardening another part of his daily routine. The physical work gave him an opportunity to remain connected to nature rather than spending all his time surrounded by books, writing and intellectual work. He wrote about the construction and deeper meaning of the retreat in the chapter "The Tower" in his autobiography Memories, Dreams, Reflections. The specific story of him tending a maize field has also become part of the accounts shared about his life at Bollingen. For someone whose career focused heavily on understanding thoughts, emotions and behaviour, his time at the retreat shows another side of his personality. Simple activities such as collecting water, chopping wood and growing food became part of the life he created for himself. 5 easy steps to grow corn You do not need a large farm to try growing corn. With the right soil, sunlight, water and nutrients, beginners can grow maize in a suitable garden space. Here are five basic steps to get started, according to Ugaao site. 1. Choose the right soil Corn grows well in fertile, well-drained loamy soil. Before planting, improve the soil by adding compost or well-rotted organic manure. A soil pH between 6.0 and 6.8 is considered suitable for healthy corn growth. A sunny location is equally important. Corn needs plenty of sunlight, so choose a spot that receives full sun for most of the day. 2. Plant the seeds properly Corn is pollinated by wind, so planting it in blocks is generally better than growing a single long row. For sweet corn, seeds can be planted around one inch deep, with roughly 8 to 12 inches between plants. Keep about 24 to 36 inches between rows. The soil should also be warm enough for germination. A temperature of at least 16°C is recommended before sowing. 3. Keep the plants watered Regular watering is important, particularly as the plants grow. Corn generally needs around 1 to 1.5 inches of water each week. Adding mulch around the plants can help the soil hold moisture for longer. It can also reduce weed growth around the crop. Feed the plants and know when to harvest 4. Add nutrients during growth Corn needs plenty of nutrients because it is a heavy feeder. A balanced fertiliser can be added when planting. Once the plants reach around 12 inches in height, a nitrogen-rich fertiliser can be used as a side dressing. Another application can be made when the plants begin producing tassels. Good nutrition can help the crop develop strong plants and healthy ears. 5. Watch for pests and harvest at the right time As the plants mature, keep an eye out for common problems such as corn earworms, rust and smut. Regularly checking the plants can help identify issues early. Corn is usually ready to harvest when the silk turns brown and the kernels become plump and milky. This generally happens around 18 to 24 days after the silks first appear. The ears can then be harvested by twisting them downward from the stalk. Carl Jung's maize field was just one small part of his life at Bollingen, but it gives an interesting glimpse into how the famous psychologist balanced intellectual work with simple, hands-on activities..
