92-летний ветеран ВМС США нашел возлюбленную спустя 70 лет и развеял её сомнения в предательстве

For nearly 70 years, an American man carried one question with him: Did Peggy Yamaguchi believe he had abandoned her? Duane Mann was 22 when he met Yamaguchi in Japan in 1953. He was serving with the US Navy and she worked at a military club in Tokyo. They fell in love, planned to marry and were expecting a child. Then Mann received orders to return to the United States. He promised Peggy he would send for her. But once he reached home, the plan began to fall apart. His savings were gone, and the letters Peggy continued sending him never reached him. Mann eventually married twice and raised six children. Peggy married another man and built a family of her own. But Mann never stopped wondering whether she had spent her life believing that he had simply walked away. At 91, he decided to look for her. Nearly 70 years after they had last seen each other, Mann and Peggy reunited in Michigan on June 1, 2022. They met at a military club in Tokyo Mann was stationed in Japan in 1953 and was among seven Navy personnel based at Tokyo Haneda International Airport. According to KETV NewsWatch and accounts later shared by Mann, he was stationed in Japan in 1953 and was among seven Navy personnel based at Tokyo Haneda International Airport. His duties included handling priority Navy cargo. During his spare time, he worked as a slot-machine repairman at an Air Force non-commissioned officers' club. That was where he met Peggy, who worked in the club's hat-check room. The two began spending time together and dancing when they were off duty. Their relationship became serious and they decided to get married. Peggy became pregnant. But in June 1954, Mann was ordered back to the United States. He left Japan about a week later. Mann later recalled the departure in a Facebook post, saying he had left Peggy in tears and pregnant. He had reassured her that he had saved enough money to bring her to America. He believed they would soon be together again. He was wrong. Mann returned home but his savings were gone Mann had left his bank account in his father's name while he was serving overseas, in case something happened to him. When he returned to Iowa in the US, he discovered that his father had spent the money. The savings he had planned to use to bring Peggy to the US were no longer there. Mann took a job with a highway construction company and began saving again. Meanwhile, he and Peggy continued writing to each other. Her letters were sent to Mann's family home. Then, from Mann's point of view, the correspondence suddenly stopped. He did not know that Peggy was still writing. According to KETV NewsWatch, Mann later learned that his mother had been burning Peggy's letters because she did not want her son to marry a Japanese woman. “She did not want me to marry a Japanese woman,” Mann told KETV NewsWatch. About three months after the letters stopped, Mann's younger sister gave him a final letter from Peggy. She had lost the baby and had married another man in 1955. For Mann, the discovery changed his understanding of what had happened. And one thought stayed with him: Peggy might have believed he had abandoned her. He built a life in Iowa, but Peggy remained part of his memories. As the years passed, he continued wondering what had become of her and whether she had blamed him for leaving. At 91, he decided to make one final attempt to find her. With help from his son Brian, Mann posted an old photograph of Peggy on Facebook and asked people to help locate her. The post eventually reached Theresa Wong, a Canadian researcher associated with the History Channel. According to KETV NewsWatch, Wong began looking through old records and found a 1956 newspaper article titled “Tokyo Bride likes life in Escanaba”. The article described a Japanese woman who had moved to Escanaba, Michigan, after marrying an American serviceman. It gave the search its crucial lead. Peggy was eventually located in Michigan. She was 91 too. Peggy had built a life in America too The moment both were reunited after nearly 70 years. Peggy had married in 1955 and moved to the US with her husband. She raised three sons. Yet Mann had not completely disappeared from her memories. One of her sons had the middle name Duane, the same as Mann's first name. After almost seven decades apart, the families arranged for the two to meet. On June 1, 2022, Mann travelled to Michigan with his son Brian. The reunion did not turn out to be awkward or distant. The two began talking about their time together in Japan and remembered dancing. Then Mann finally addressed the question that had troubled him for most of his adult life. “I was worried that you thought I abandoned you,” he told Peggy. “And I'm here to tell you that I didn't abandon you at all. I just couldn't find you.” Peggy reassured him. She also noticed that Mann had kept photographs of her for all those years. “You must have loved me,” she told him. “I did,” Mann replied. The reunion was not about starting over By the time Mann and Peggy met again, both had lived separate lives, married and raised families. Their reunion was not about going back to the relationship they had as young people. For Mann, it was about finally explaining why he had never returned and finding out what Peggy had believed all those years. The reunion gave him the opportunity to tell her that directly. For Peggy, it also meant seeing the man she had loved in Japan after almost 70 years and discovering that he had not simply forgotten her. Mann later described the reunion as a freeing moment after carrying the story for so long. Mann has since died. He was 92 years old. His son, Brian, shared on Facebook that Theresa Wong, one of the people who helped find Peggy, helped Duane finish his memoirs before died. Now, Duane's story is being shared with Hollywood with the hopes of being made into a movie or TV series. But before his death, he was able to meet Peggy again and tell her the truth he had wanted her to know for nearly seven decades.
