Мексиканская пословица предупреждает: внезапное богатство без самоконтроля ведет к безумию

“He who has never had anything” and the shock of abundance The proverb begins with a sharp contrast between having little and suddenly having more. A person who has spent years without access to certain comforts or possessions may react strongly when those things become available. What was once unattainable can suddenly seem within reach, creating an urge to enjoy everything at once. The proverb is less concerned with acquiring wealth itself than with the behaviour that can follow an abrupt change in circumstances. New money or status may bring opportunities that were previously unavailable, but it can also encourage excessive spending or a desire to display newfound success. The proverb warns about losing perspective during that transition. Its lesson is particularly relevant when excitement begins to replace judgment. Having more does not necessarily mean that everything should be consumed, purchased or displayed immediately. The warning behind “goes crazy with greed” The final part of the proverb delivers its strongest criticism. “Goes crazy with greed” refers to excess rather than simply enjoying newfound comfort. The concern is that someone may become so captivated by abundance that moderation disappears. The proverb therefore treats self-control as an important part of prosperity. Wealth can provide freedom and security, but without restraint, the desire for more can become difficult to satisfy. Why moderation matters after sudden success The proverb offers a practical lesson about adjusting to changing circumstances. When success arrives quickly, maintaining familiar values and habits can provide stability. Instead of allowing possessions or wealth to determine behaviour, a person can decide how much is genuinely useful and where restraint is necessary. This does not mean rejecting comfort or refusing to enjoy success. It means avoiding the assumption that greater wealth automatically requires greater consumption. What the proverb says about showing off Newfound prosperity can also create pressure to demonstrate that circumstances have changed. Expensive purchases, extravagant lifestyles or conspicuous displays of wealth can become ways of signalling success. The proverb views such behaviour with scepticism, particularly when it stems from an intense desire to compensate for having lacked something in the past. Its message is that prosperity does not need to be constantly demonstrated to be real. “He who has never had anything” and the value of perspective The proverb's underlying lesson is about perspective. People who suddenly gain wealth may still carry the emotional impact of having lived without it. That contrast can make new possessions feel especially powerful. Keeping perspective means recognising that circumstances can change without allowing those changes to completely reshape one's priorities. The proverb encourages people to enjoy improvement without becoming controlled by it. Having more can improve a person's choices and opportunities, but the ability to handle abundance responsibly is equally important. Sudden success can test character in ways that hardship does not. The Mexican proverb reminds us that gaining wealth is one challenge; knowing how to live with it is another. Its enduring lesson is simple: when fortune changes suddenly, enjoy what you have, but do not let abundance take away your judgment or sense of proportion.
