Raja Gope was six when he got separated from his father and boarded the wrong train. He was supposed to travel with his father to West Bengal. Instead, the train took him to Kerala. For 13 years, Gope lived away from his family. He eventually stayed in Kerala and could remember only a few details about where he came from the first names of his parents, the name Chaibasa and that his home was near a hill and a school. Gope (now 20) finally returned home to Harimara village in the Sonua area of West Singhbhum district, Jharkhand. His reunion in March 2026 with his mother and four sisters came after police, child welfare authorities and NGOs worked together to trace his family. According to the Indian Express and various media, Gope was brought back from Kerala on March 10 and handed over to his parents the same day. He was only six when he got separated from his father Gope had accompanied his father on a journey to a brick kiln in West Bengal when the two became separated. According to police, the six-year-old then boarded a train heading towards Kerala instead of the train he was supposed to take. He eventually reached Ernakulam. There, child rights activists rescued him and he was placed in a children's home. At that age, he could remember the names of his parents but could not provide enough information to identify his exact village. He knew only that he was from the Chaibasa area of Jharkhand. That limited information made finding his family difficult. Years passed before authorities got a new clue When Gope finally returned to Harimara, the reunion became a village event. (Photo credit: Indian Express) The breakthrough came years later. About a month before his return, the Child Welfare Committee in Thrissur, Kerala, informed authorities that a young person staying there had been saying that he was from Chaibasa in Jharkhand. Gope could remember his father, mother and sisters. He could also describe where his house was located near a hill and beside a school. The officer in charge of Sonua police station, Shashi Bala Bhengra, told The New Indian Express that the information was circulated among police stations in the district. Authorities began checking the names and other details provided by Gope. The police also circulated his identity and other information on social media. That eventually brought a family forward. A family told the police that their son had gone missing. After the details were verified, a special police team travelled to Thrissur on March 8 and brought Gope back to Jharkhand on March 10. He had forgotten his native language The 13 years away from home had changed Gope's life in ways that went beyond his location. He now speaks Malayalam and Hindi but has forgotten Ho, his native language, according to PTI. He also built a life around football in Kerala. In February 2026, he moved to Kannur under a Kerala Child Welfare Committee skill-development and rehabilitation program. It was there that local activists connected with the NGO Railway Children. A video of Gope was then circulated in Chaibasa, which helped authorities trace his village. Police needed documents to establish his identity Finding the village was only part of the process. Authorities also had to establish Gope's identity before he could be taken back to his family. Sonua police said the process took time because of the documentation involved. These included a declaration from his mother, Mani Gope, as his father had died four years earlier. His village welcomed him with drums When Gope finally returned to Harimara, the reunion became a village event. Students from his school organised a procession with dhols and nagaras. Women performed a tribal dance as the 19-year-old returned after more than a decade away. He embraced his mother and four sisters. His mother, Mani Gope, told PTI that she wanted her son to stay with the family. But she also knew that he had football commitments in Kerala and needed to complete his studies. She said she would not stop him because, after years of not knowing where he was, she was simply relieved to know that he was alive and doing well. Raja wants to support his family Gope was also clear about what he wants to do next. After meeting his family, he said he was very happy to be home. He told PTI that he wanted to support his mother and sister and, after getting a good job, hoped to take them to Kerala. For now, football and his studies remain part of his life in Kerala. Despite the years he spent away, Gope said he has not forgotten the family he lost as a child. His return has given him a chance to rebuild that connection while continuing the life he created in Kerala. For Raja’s family, the return ended 13 years of uncertainty. For Raja, it meant reconnecting with a home he remembered only through fragments, while holding on to the language, football and life he built in Kerala.
