Школьница из Орегона создала платформу StratScholar для помощи начинающим исследователям

For many high-school students, becoming interested in research is easier than figuring out how to actually begin. Finding a mentor, understanding research methods, and knowing how to publish or share completed work can be difficult without the right guidance. Riya Velhal, an Oregon high-school junior, experienced that uncertainty herself during her first research internship. Instead of allowing that experience to discourage her, she used it as inspiration to create a student-led initiative aimed at helping other students navigate research with greater confidence. According to Velhal's profile on StratScholar, she began her first internship at the start of her sophomore year and remembers feeling “extremely lost.” Her experience eventually inspired her to create StratScholar, a student-led initiative focused on giving young researchers access to mentorship, resources, and opportunities to share their work. A difficult first experience Velhal's introduction to research did not come with a clear roadmap. During her first internship, she found herself without the resources, support system and community needed to understand how research worked. For a high-school student, that can make an already complicated process feel overwhelming. Research involves more than choosing an interesting topic. Students need to learn how to develop questions, find reliable information, understand existing research and communicate their findings. Without someone to provide direction, it can be difficult to know whether an idea is worth pursuing or what steps should come next. Velhal's own experience made her recognise that the problem could potentially affect other students as well. There could be many students interested in research who simply lacked someone to guide them. That realisation became the starting point for StratScholar. Turning experience into action Rather than viewing her difficult first internship as a setback, Velhal used it to think about how the research experience could be made easier for other teenagers. Her answer was to create a student-led platform where young people could find research opportunities, connect with mentors and develop their research interests. StratScholar is built around the idea that students should not have to rely entirely on existing personal connections to discover research opportunities. The organisation aims to make research experiences more accessible to middle and high-school students. The initiative also emphasises students learning from one another. Instead of presenting research as something available only to students who already understand the academic system, StratScholar seeks to create a community where young researchers can receive guidance while developing their own interests. For Velhal, this mission is closely connected to her own development as a researcher. Her journey into research After her first internship, Velhal continued exploring research independently. Her StratScholar profile notes that she became involved in independent research related to campaign finance, giving her an opportunity to explore a subject in greater depth. That progression is significant because her experience moved from uncertainty to independent exploration. The student who initially felt lost while trying to understand research eventually began working on her own research interests and thinking about how other students could receive better support. It also appears to have shaped the way she views mentorship. Having experienced the difficulty of entering research without enough guidance, Velhal's work with StratScholar focuses on making that initial transition easier for others. A platform for young researchers StratScholar is not simply intended to connect students with research projects. Its broader purpose is to help teenagers develop the skills and confidence needed to participate in research. The organisation provides opportunities intended to help students learn about research while connecting them with mentors and other students. Its focus extends beyond the research process itself, encouraging students to develop communication, presentation and leadership skills alongside their academic work. This matters because completing a research project is only one part of the experience. Students also need to know how to explain their findings and communicate their ideas effectively. For teenagers interested in eventually pursuing academic careers, those skills can be valuable. Making research less intimidating Knowing where to begin can be one of the biggest challenges for young researchers. A student might have an interesting question but have no idea which expert to contact. Another might complete a project but not know how to present or publish it. Someone else might simply need another student to explain how the research process works. StratScholar is intended to address those early obstacles by bringing resources and mentorship together in one student-focused initiative. The emphasis on accessibility is also important. Research opportunities can sometimes feel out of reach for students who do not already have connections to universities, researchers, or specialised programmes. A platform built specifically for younger students can provide a more approachable entry point. From feeling lost to helping others Velhal's story ultimately began with a problem she personally encountered. She entered her first research internship excited about the opportunity but found herself unsure about what to do next. Instead of keeping that experience to herself, she turned it into a question: how could other students avoid feeling the same way? That question eventually became StratScholar. Her work demonstrates how a frustrating experience can sometimes lead to a practical solution. By creating a student-led initiative focused on mentorship, research opportunities, and sharing student work, Velhal is attempting to make the research journey more accessible to teenagers who might otherwise struggle to find their way. For young students interested in research, having an idea is often only the beginning. Finding someone who can help turn that idea into meaningful work can make all the difference. StratScholar is Velhal's effort to make that connection easier, and to ensure that fewer students have to feel as lost as she once did.
