Гаррисон Форд рассказал, как бедность и 15 лет бедствия почти заставили его навсегда уйти из актерского дела

Harrison Ford’s darkest career moment before his Star Wars journey: Here's why poverty almost made him walk away from acting forever Sinthya Banik | Aug 26, 2026, 03:09 IST Harrison Ford spent 15 lean years as a self-taught carpenter supporting his young family while taking only selective acting roles, nearly walking away before Star Wars changed everything. Image credit : IMDb| Harrison Ford’s personal struggle and career journey before Star Wars Harrison Ford is one of the most recognisable faces in film history, yet his path to that status was anything but smooth. Long before Han Solo and Indiana Jones made him a global star, the Chicago-born actor spent roughly 15 years scraping by in Hollywood. Married young with two small sons, he taught himself carpentry to put food on the table while taking only the rare acting jobs that actually interested him. Poverty and the slow grind of bit parts nearly pushed him out of the business altogether. In a May 2026 commencement speech at Arizona State University, Ford spoke openly about those lean years, reminding a new generation that success rarely arrives on schedule. Born on July 13, 1942 in Chicago to Dorothy, a former radio actress, and Christopher Ford, an advertising executive with a background in vaudeville, Harrison Ford grew up in the Illinois suburbs. He has never described himself as a natural performer. In his own words from the 2026 Arizona State speech, he was a student who “didn’t give much thought to my future” and “did not make good choices.” At Ripon College in Wisconsin he studied English and philosophy, but his grades slipped. Looking for an easy A in his junior year, he enrolled in a drama class, hoping he might work the box office or build sets rather than perform. What happened next surprised him. “My classmates were people I had previously discounted as geeks and misfits,” he told the graduates. “But I soon realized I was a geek and a misfit. I had found my fit. These were my people.” Hiding behind character, costume and makeup gave the shy young man a bravery he had never felt before. He landed major roles in several campus productions that year. Passion, he later reflected, had led him to community. Four days before graduation he was expelled. The official reason was plagiarism. With little holding him in Wisconsin, he married his college girlfriend Mary Marquardt in the summer of 1964 and the two of them drove west. Ford has said he flipped a coin between New York and Los Angeles and chose the warmer city because he did not want to starve and freeze at the same time. A season of summer stock theatre with the Belfry Players followed, then a contract with Columbia Pictures’ new talent programme at $150 a week. The mid-1960s studio system did not suit him. Columbia tried to reshape him into a conventional leading-man type, complete with an Elvis-style pompadour. Ford bristled at the process. He lasted about 18 months before being let go for being “too difficult.” A similar short stint at Universal followed. Bit parts piled up: an uncredited bellhop in Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round (1966), small television roles on Gunsmoke, The F.B.I., Ironside, The Virginian and Love, American Style. He played the same kind of character three times on one series alone. He later said he realised he was going to wear out his face doing episodic television. By then he and Mary had two young sons, Benjamin and Willard. The acting work was not covering the bills. Rather than take every job that came along, Ford taught himself carpentry. He went to the Encino public library, borrowed books on woodworking, and started practising. His first proper professional job was turning a garage into a $100,000 recording studio for Brazilian musician Sérgio Mendes. Mendes never asked if the young man with the tool belt had done the work before. Ford was up on the roof consulting diagrams on how to cut valley rafters. The studio came out well. As the word spread, he built decks for actress Sally Kellerman, cabinets and entrances for industry people who could afford quality craftsmanship. Kellerman dubbed him “carpenter to the stars.” In interviews over the years Ford has been clear about the motivation. “I stopped taking the same kind of job over and over again in television so I didn’t wear out my welcome,” he told Entertainment Tonight in an older conversation. “And I thought if I found another job to make money, I wouldn’t be tempted to take acting jobs merely to have enough money to put food on the table.” His longtime manager Patricia McQueeney later recalled that even when lucrative television offers arrived, Ford would sometimes simply decline and go build a cabinet instead. In his May 2026 commencement address at Arizona State University, where he received an honorary Doctor of Arts and Humane Letters, Ford put the stretch into plain numbers. “Acting was not yet paying the bills,” he said. “I was supporting my growing family with carpentry jobs, another way to put food on the table. I only took acting jobs when the part challenged me. This went on for about 15 years, during which I did a lot of carpentry and only four or five acting jobs.” Those selective roles included the street-racing hot-rodder Bob Falfa in George Lucas’sAmerican Graffiti (1973) and a supporting part in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Conversation (1974). Everything else was woodwork. He has described the period as practical rather than romantic. He loved making things, but the primary purpose was survival. The financial pressure was constant. On the set of American Graffiti he briefly walked out when the weekly rate sat well below what he could earn with his tools. The production found a little more money and he stayed. One of the most revealing stories involves the installation of elaborate millwork at Francis Ford Coppola’s offices. A friend had designed the entrance and needed a carpenter. Ford agreed, but only if he could work at night. He did not want the people walking through those doors during the day to see him primarily as a carpenter. He wanted them to keep thinking of him as an actor. One Monday morning he was still finishing up when George Lucas and Richard Dreyfuss walked in. Lucas was beginning the casting process for a science-fiction film calledStar Wars . Ford was in his tool belt, sweeping the floor. He said hello, chatted briefly, and went back to work. Weeks later the producers asked him to read lines with other actors auditioning for the various parts. There was no indication he was being considered himself. He simply helped out as a favour, reading opposite a number of actresses trying out for the princess role. Then they offered him Han Solo. In later interviews Ford has said he was quite surprised. His principal job at the time was still carpentry. He had a house he wanted to remodel and a young family to support. The Star Wars offer was not the end of the struggle so much as the moment the long, selective grind finally connected. Star Wars, released in 1977 and later known as Episode IV – A New Hope, is a space-opera adventure that follows a farm boy, a captured princess, a cynical smuggler and a pair of droids as they confront an oppressive galactic empire. At its core it is a classic hero’s journey dressed in laser swords, space battles and a mystical energy field called the Force. George Lucas drew on myth, Flash Gordon serials and pioneering visual effects to create something that felt both familiar and entirely new. Ford played Han Solo, the roguish pilot of the Millennium Falcon who begins as a gun-for-hire interested only in money and ends up a reluctant hero. The character’s world-weary sarcasm and practical streak suited the actor who had spent years balancing artistic ambition with the need to pay rent. Ford has said he was one of the few people on the production who thought the film might actually work, even though he had never been a science-fiction fan and had never seen the special effects. He simply recognised the mythic power in the story. The film became a cultural phenomenon, redefined the modern blockbuster, and turned its three young leads into stars overnight. For Ford it arrived when he was already 34, with a decade and a half of hard-won experience behind him. Once Star Wars arrived, the load lightened dramatically. The original trilogy was followed by the first three Indiana Jones films, Blade Runner, Witness (which earned him an Academy Award nomination), the Jack Ryan movies, The Fugitive and a long run of commercial successes through the 1980s and 1990s. Ford has always approached the job as craft rather than pure art. He has compared acting to carpentry more than once: lay a solid foundation, then build carefully, step by step. He has been selective about revisiting iconic roles. He returned as Han Solo in The Force Awakens and made a brief appearance in The Rise of Skywalker. Indiana Jones received what felt like a final outing in Dial of Destiny (2023). On television he has delivered some of his most interesting late-career work, playing Jacob Dutton opposite Helen Mirren in the Yellowstone prequel 1923 and the acerbic psychiatrist Dr Paul Rhodes in the Apple TV+ comedy Shrinking. The latter role brought him his first Emmy nomination and, in season three, the chance to share scenes with Michael J. Fox while playing a character living with Parkinson’s. In 2025 he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in Captain America: Brave New World. As of 2026 he continues working. He is not appearing in the new Blade Runner 2099 series. He has, however, become the actual model for the Indiana Jones animatronic in Disney World’s forthcoming attraction Indiana Jones and the Myth of the Jade Serpent, a project he announced with characteristic dry humour about his continuing fear of snakes. At 84 he has shown little interest in full retirement, saying simply that without the work he would not know what to do with himself. For an actor who spent his first 15 years largely outside the spotlight, Ford has accumulated a solid list of major industry honours. His sole Academy Award nomination came in 1986 for Best Actor in Witness. He has received five Golden Globe nominations across film and television, plus the Cecil B. DeMille Award in 2002 for lifetime achievement. In 2000 the American Film Institute presented him with its Life Achievement Award. Later career recognition has been steady. He received an Honorary César in 2010 and the Honorary Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023. The Critics Choice Association gave him its Career Achievement Award in 2024. In March 2026 he accepted the SAG-AFTRA Life Achievement Award, the guild’s highest honour, telling the room with typical dry humour that it felt a little early given he still considers himself a working actor. He also holds a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Television has brought newer nominations. His work on Shrinking earned him Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in both 2025 and 2026, along with corresponding Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nods. Genre fans have also recognised him repeatedly through the Saturn Awards, including wins for Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Force Awakens and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Beyond film and television, Ford has been honoured for his aviation work, including the Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy, and in May 2026 Arizona State University conferred on him an honorary Doctor of Arts and Humane Letters in recognition of both his cultural influence and his long conservation efforts.
