Птицы с расписанными клювами: от фламинго до альбатросов

Nature is endowed with beautiful creatures, and some of these look straight out of a fantasy tale. Birds are also among these miracles of nature, and some of them are so mesmerising that they look hand-painted, and their beaks are where some birds really let loose. Not just plain black and white, these species paint the skies with bills that look dipped, brushed, or airbrushed by a very confident artist. Streaks of scarlet blend into purple, yellow fades into orange, and beautiful streaks are added almost like a final, signature stroke. Here are some birds whose beaks look painted in bright colours. Their beaks are dark red with a black tip; it can reveal rich undertones of deep purple along with highlights of scarlet and pink, especially in good light. It adds to the more saturated look of the bird than the pale pink-and-black bills of larger flamingo species, making this smallest member of the family surprisingly the most richly coloured of all. Hornbills don't just have colourful beaks; what adds to their appearance is a matching casque on top. Unlike toucans, hornbills get their vivid hues not from natural pigment in the bill itself, but from preening oils they rub on daily. The rhinoceros hornbill is the best example of this, with a base of white and black laced with shades of red, orange, and yellow, giving it a look that looks like cosmetic, reapplied by the bird itself. Male king eiders wear one of the most architectural beaks in the bird world. The scarlet bill can look simply white-tipped, or can change into a deeper purplish band fading to a paler tip. Placed above it all is a bright yellow frontal lobe, neatly outlined in black, like a separate piece attached with precision. The overall appearance seems less natural and more like "assembled by a jeweller." Puffins only get into their full colour during the breeding season as their beak turns coral and blue-grey, layered with paler blue-grey and yellow accents, finished off with a bright yellow fleshy rosette at the base. The tufted puffin leans orange with green plates, while the horned puffin shows yellow and red. The red-footed booby usually lives in the shadow of its blue-footed relative, but its beak steals the show. During breeding season, it turns a pearlescent blend of pale blues and greens, and looks nearly iridescent in certain light. The effect is increased by patches of bright blue, pink, and black skin around the base, making the beak look like a border added for contrast.
