Таинственное исчезновение экипажа военного дирижабля L-8: пилоты пропали без вести над Калифорнией

Listen to this article in summarized format The aircraft was the L-8, a former Goodyear blimp that had been taken over by the Navy. According to the Smithsonian, it left Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay on the morning of August 16, 1942, carrying Lieutenant Ernest DeWitt Cody and Ensign Charles E. Adams. Both were experienced airship pilots. The crew's final message The patrol initially appeared to be routine. The L-8 was being used to watch for Japanese submarines along the California coast when Cody noticed an oil slick in the water. The US Naval Institute's account of the incident says the crew radioed that they were investigating the slick. The Smithsonian similarly records the last known communication at about 7:50 a.m.: “Am investigating oil slick.” After that, there was no further communication from Cody or Adams. The blimp was later seen rising into the clouds before drifting back towards the coast. People on the ground eventually watched it come down near the beach. Two fishermen tried to hold it, but the aircraft broke free and continued drifting until it finally reached Daly City. An aircraft with nobody inside When the L-8 landed on a Daly City street, rescuers expected to find its crew. Instead, they found an empty gondola. According to the Smithsonian, the door was open, but there was no obvious sign of fire or serious damage. The radio was still working and both parachutes were untouched. The aircraft's life raft also remained aboard. One of the aircraft's depth charges had also disappeared, but it was later found on a nearby golf course. An examination of the gondola produced no clear clue about what had happened to the men. The radio had remained switched on, while the parachutes were still neatly stored. The situation was made stranger by the number of people who had seen the blimp during its journey. Ships, fishermen, aircraft and people on shore had watched the L-8, yet nobody could provide a reliable account of seeing Cody or Adams leave it. What happened to the two officers? The Navy searched for the men by land, air and sea, but neither was ever found. A formal investigation also failed to settle the question. Several theories appeared over the years. Some suggested the men had been captured by the Japanese, while others proposed that they had deliberately disappeared or had been involved in a violent confrontation. More unusual theories even involved aliens. The Smithsonian notes that none of these explanations was supported by convincing evidence. The explanation considered most plausible was much less dramatic. Investigators believed one officer may have fallen from the open gondola while dealing with something during the investigation of the oil slick. The other could then have tried to help and accidentally fallen as well. Aviation historian Dan Grossman has questioned even that theory. “It is certainly possible that both officers accidentally fell into the ocean,” he says. “But if one officer had accidentally fallen, the other would have remained in the blimp to radio for assistance (the radio was functional) and ... mark his comrade’s location.” “Indeed,” he adds, “‘Don’t Give Up the Ship’ is the U.S. Navy’s unofficial motto.” The Ghost Blimp survives The mystery did not end the L-8's career. The Navy recovered and repaired the blimp, and after World War II it was returned to Goodyear. It was later renamed America and continued flying for decades before being retired in 1982. Its gondola is now preserved at the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida. The US Navy's own historical records still describe the fate of Cody and Adams as a mystery. More than 80 years later, the L-8 remains one of aviation's strangest disappearances: a blimp that returned from a patrol without its crew, landed without them and left behind almost everything investigators might have expected to explain where the two men had gone.
