Flowers have been admired for their beauty and symbolism since ancient times, and many have inspired names that have survived across generations. For parents looking for a baby girl name that feels graceful yet meaningful, these floral-inspired names offer a charming connection to mythology, history and the natural world. Each name carries its own story, making it a beautiful choice with a sense of character and timeless appeal. Iris comes from the ancient Greek word meaning “rainbow” and was the name of the Greek goddess Iris, who served as a messenger of the gods. The name is also directly associated with the iris flower, giving it a distinctive connection to both Greek mythology and nature. Daphne comes from ancient Greek and means “laurel.” In Greek mythology, Daphne was a nymph who was transformed into a laurel tree while fleeing Apollo. The name therefore carries both a botanical meaning and a connection to one of the best-known stories of ancient Greek mythology. Anthea comes from the ancient Greek word anthos, meaning “flower” or “blossom.” Antheia was also a figure associated with flowers and gardens in Greek mythology. With its direct connection to blossoms and its classical Greek roots, Anthea makes an elegant floral choice. Flora comes from the Latin word flos, meaning “flower.” In Roman mythology, Flora was the goddess of flowers, vegetation and spring. The name has therefore been connected with both the natural world and ancient Roman tradition for centuries, giving it a particularly strong historical floral association. Ianthe is an ancient Greek name meaning “violet flower.” In Greek mythology, Ianthe was also the name of an Oceanid, one of the daughters of the ancient sea god Oceanus. Its floral meaning and mythological roots make Ianthe a unique choice for parents seeking a distinctive name. Rose is one of the world's most enduring flower names. The rose was cultivated in ancient civilisations and featured prominently in Greek and Roman art, literature and mythology. Its simple sound and long history have helped make Rose a timeless name. Violet comes from the name of the violet flower and ultimately traces to the Latin viola. The flower has a long history in European and Mediterranean traditions, while the name itself has become an enduring floral choice. Violet combines a delicate natural image with a classic, elegant sound. Rosalie is a feminine name connected to the Latin rosa, meaning “rose.” Although Rosalie is not the name of an ancient flower itself, it belongs to the long tradition of names derived from the rose. Its softer, more elaborate form gives the classic floral association a distinctive character. Lilia is a form of Lily, ultimately connected with the Latin lilium, meaning “lily.” Lilies have appeared in the artistic and cultural traditions of ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern societies. The name therefore combines an old botanical association with a soft and graceful modern sound. Susanna has ancient Hebrew roots and is traditionally connected with the word for “lily.” The name appears in ancient Jewish and Christian traditions and has been used across many cultures for centuries. Its connection to the lily gives Susanna a subtle floral quality alongside its long historical heritage. A flower-inspired name can offer more than a connection to nature. Names such as Iris, Daphne, Anthea and Ianthe carry stories from ancient Greek language and mythology, while Flora has a direct connection to Roman tradition. Rose, Violet, Lilia and Rosalie draw on flowers that have been admired for generations, while Susanna brings an ancient linguistic and cultural history. Together, these names offer a beautiful mix of mythology, nature and timeless elegance. (All Image Credits: Canva)
