Маккензи Скотт требует перенести фокус новостей с филантропов на людей, создающих социальные изменения

Stories about social change tend to focus on the people at the top of the story, the prominent leaders, the large institutions, the wealthy donors whose names end up in the headline. MacKenzie Scott, who has given away tens of billions of dollars since 2019, pushed back on that habit directly in her own words. "People struggling against inequities deserve center stage in stories about the change they are creating," she wrote, adding that this holds true "equally, perhaps especially, when their work is funded by wealth." She made this point while announcing a $2.7 billion round of donations to 286 organisations in June 2021, in a post where she explicitly said she had wanted the headline to read "286 Teams Empowering Voices the World Needs to Hear," rather than a story built around her own donation, a genuinely unusual instinct for someone whose name is one of the most recognisable in modern philanthropy. Her approach reflected a broader attempt to shift attention toward organisations working directly with communities, particularly those addressing inequality and social exclusion. By directing unrestricted funding to these groups, Scott argued that those closest to problems often understand best what solutions their communities need. Quote of the day by MacKenzie Scott "People struggling against inequities deserve center stage in stories about the change they are creating" Where this quote actually comes from Scott wrote this in a Medium post titled "Seeding by Ceding," published on 15 June 2021, alongside her then-husband Dan Jewett, announcing the $2.7 billion given to 286 organisations working in communities she described as "historically underfunded and overlooked." In that same post, she went further than simply naming her own preference for a different headline, writing directly that "putting large donors at the center of stories on social progress is a distortion of their role," and adding that "any wealth is a product of a collective effort that included them," referring to the very communities whose work made that wealth possible in the first place. It is a genuinely unusual thing for someone giving away this much money to say publicly, since most large donations naturally attract attention to the person writing the cheque rather than the people actually doing the work on the ground. What Scott's quote is really saying Scott's message here is about who actually receives visibility and credit once a major social problem starts getting real attention. When a serious issue finally reaches the public conversation, the people most directly affected by it can end up receiving considerably less recognition than the institutions or donors who later provide funding or publicity. Scott is directly challenging that pattern. Her words suggest that people struggling against real inequity are never simply passive recipients quietly waiting for someone else to arrive and fix their situation. They are very often the organisers, the advocates, the community leaders and the educators actually driving the change themselves, long before any outside funding ever shows up to support it. Why the people actually living through a problem deserve to be heard directly People who experience a genuine hardship tend to understand its real consequences in ways that outsiders, however well intentioned, often cannot fully grasp from a distance. They know exactly which barriers actually exist day to day, which proposed solutions have already quietly failed, and which changes would genuinely make a practical difference in their own lives. That kind of hard-won, lived knowledge gets overlooked surprisingly often, particularly when major decisions get made in rooms far away from the communities those decisions will actually affect. Giving those people a genuinely central place in the conversation tends to make the whole discussion considerably more accurate, as well as simply more fair. The real difference between helping people and actually supporting their leadership There is a meaningful difference between doing something for a group of people and genuinely supporting people who are already working hard to improve their own circumstances themselves. A community often already has its own organisations, campaigners and local leaders quietly addressing a problem long before any outside attention arrives. Outside support can certainly bring real resources into that effort, but that does not automatically mean the outsiders providing the funding should become the actual face of the work being done. Scott's quote is really encouraging a model where the people genuinely creating the change keep hold of their own visibility and agency throughout, rather than quietly having it absorbed into someone else's story. Why the way a story gets told actually shapes who gets remembered The way any story about social progress gets told genuinely influences who ends up receiving attention, credibility and further support down the line. If coverage of a cause consistently places wealthy donors, large institutions or well known public figures at the centre of the narrative, the people actually doing the work on the ground can quietly disappear from the story altogether, even though they were there the entire time. When those same communities are placed properly at the centre instead, audiences tend to understand far more clearly what the actual problem looks like up close, and exactly who has been working to address it long before any headline ever arrived. What "centre stage" genuinely means in practice Scott's specific use of the phrase "centre stage" carries real weight here. It does not simply mean mentioning the people affected by inequity somewhere in the story as a passing detail. It means actually giving their experiences and their contributions the genuine importance they deserve throughout. That could mean listening carefully to their own perspective, properly highlighting their actual achievements, recognising their genuine expertise, and letting them explain, in their own words, exactly what kind of change they actually want to see happen. Recognition, understood this way, becomes simply part of respecting the people who were already doing the work. Other popular quotes by MacKenzie Scott - "Any wealth is a product of a collective effort that included them." - "Putting large donors at the center of stories on social progress is a distortion of their role." - "The social structures that inflate wealth present obstacles to them. And despite those obstacles, they are providing solutions that benefit us all." Why this quote is relevant today Plenty of social problems today get discussed mainly through statistics, institutions and formal policy debates, all of which genuinely matter, but which can also quietly make the actual people behind the numbers disappear from view entirely. Scott's quote pulls the focus firmly back onto them. People affected by real inequity are very often not simply sitting and waiting for change to arrive from somewhere else. They may already be organising, campaigning, building genuine solutions and supporting the people around them, all well before any outside funding or media attention ever finds its way to them. The broader lesson here is genuinely a simple one. When telling the story of how change actually happened, pay real attention to the people who were creating it from the very start, not only the people who happened to become associated with it later on. Their voices were never meant to be an afterthought. They deserved to be part of the story from the very beginning.
