The interview had started with an immediate concern. The candidate had joined 15 minutes late, and Jain initially wondered whether his tardiness could indicate a professionalism issue. His resume did not immediately stand out either. Jain described it as average, while noting that he did not have much experience. However, as the conversation progressed, she noticed something that began to change her impression of him. The candidate was able to explain the projects listed on his resume properly. Rather than simply listing achievements or skills, he appeared to understand the work he had actually done. Instead of guessing or attempting to give an impressive-sounding response, he was straightforward. He said, “Honestly, I don't know the answer to that.” For Jain, the response was significant because the candidate did not try to bluff his way through the question. There was no guessing and no attempt to appear more knowledgeable than he was. He simply acknowledged that he did not know. The interview then moved to a more practical question. Jain asked what he would do if he encountered a similar situation at work and did not know how to solve it. His answer gave her another reason to reconsider the initial concerns raised by his late arrival and average resume. His approach to a workplace problem impressed the entrepreneur The candidate explained that he would first try to understand the problem himself. If he still could not figure it out, he would ask someone with more experience. His reasoning was simple. He did not want to provide the wrong answer and potentially create a problem. That response stayed with Jain. It showed that the candidate understood an important workplace skill: knowing when to solve a problem independently and when to seek help rather than allowing pride or the fear of appearing inexperienced to get in the way. She noted that employers often pay attention to punctuality, communication, confidence, English and presentation during interviews.
