Речной дельфин Ганга: слепой национальный символ Индии, выживающий в реках с помощью эхолокации

Ask most people to name India's national animal and they'll say tiger without missing a beat. Ask about the national aquatic animal, and you'll probably get a blank stare. It's the Ganges river dolphin (Platanista gangetica) , and honestly, it deserves a lot more attention than it gets, because almost everything about this creature sounds made up until you check the facts. As India prepares to celebrate its 80th independence day here are a few things you must know about the national aquatic animal. It was documented way back in 1801 The Ganges river dolphin isn't some recently discovered species. It was officially documented in 1801. So we're talking about an animal that scientists have known about for well over two centuries. It's also known locally as "susu," a name that comes from the puffing sound it makes when it surfaces to breathe. It's blind, and hunts using sound instead Here's the fact that tends to stop people mid-scroll. This dolphin doesn't really use its eyes at all, over generations, it's essentially lost the ability to see, since the murky, silt-heavy waters of the Ganga never gave eyesight much of a purpose to begin with. Instead, it navigates and hunts using echolocation, sending out ultrasonic sound waves that bounce off fish and other prey, letting the dolphin build something like a mental picture of what's around it. It's a strange trade-off nature made, give up sight entirely, and get a built-in sonar system in return. It became India's national aquatic animal in 2009 The Ganges river dolphin was declared India's National Aquatic Animal in 2009, during the very first meeting of the National Ganga River Basin Authority, and the Ministry of Environment and Forests formally notified the decision the following year. This dolphin is considered a reliable indicator of the overall health of the Ganga River ecosystem, so protecting the species essentially means protecting the river itself, along with everything and everyone downstream that depends on it. It's one of only four true river dolphins left on the planet This is where the story gets a little sobering. The Ganges river dolphin belongs to an extremely small club, it's one of just four "obligate" freshwater dolphin species left in the world, meaning it lives exclusively in rivers and can't survive in the sea. The other three are the bhulan of Pakistan's Indus River, the boto of the Amazon, and the baiji of China's Yangtze River, which scientists declared functionally extinct back in 2006. That leaves the Ganges dolphin as one of the last three of its kind still holding on, which puts its survival in a very different context than most people realise. It's genuinely endangered, and the threats keep piling up The population numbers vary depending on the source, but most estimates put the total somewhere in the low thousands, with a significant share concentrated in the Chambal River in Uttar Pradesh. The Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary in Bihar was set up specifically to give this species a fighting chance, and the animal is fully protected under India's Wildlife Protection Act. So next time someone brings up national symbols and stops at the tiger, bring up the susu. A blind dolphin that's been swimming through Indian rivers since before anyone had a camera to prove it, quietly surviving on sound alone, is a pretty remarkable thing to have representing an entire country's waters.
