By that point, Percy “Master P” Miller had already spent years building No Limit from the ground up, using independent distribution, relentless releases and an unmistakable visual identity to create a movement that operated differently from much of the traditional music industry. Ghetto D arrived at the moment when all that groundwork exploded into the mainstream.
Nearly three decades later, Master P and the No Limit legacy are still being celebrated, including the No Limit and Cash Money concert coming to Houston on September 11. For Houston fans, the show also represents a reunion of two Southern rap movements whose music became deeply connected to the culture of the Gulf Coast. Ghetto D remains an important piece of that history. The album produced some of Master P’s most recognizable records, showcased a deep No Limit roster and reached No. 1 on both the Billboard 200 and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts.
‘Ghetto D’ Was Master P’s Sixth Studio Album
By the time Ghetto D arrived, Master P was far from a new artist. Released September 2, 1997, through No Limit Records and Priority Records, the project was his sixth studio album.
The Album Made an Incredible Jump to No. 1
Ghetto D initially debuted at No. 137 on the Billboard 200 before making a massive jump to No. 1 during its second week. It also reached No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
It Sold 726,000 Copies in Its Second Week
The jump to No. 1 came with enormous sales. Ghetto D moved 726,000 copies during its second week, demonstrating just how quickly Master P and No Limit’s fan base had grown beyond the underground.
4. ‘Make ’Em Say Uhh!’ Became a Master P Anthem
Few songs are more closely associated with Master P than “Make ’Em Say Uhh!” Featuring Fiend, Silkk The Shocker, Mia X and Mystikal, the posse cut became one of the signature records of the No Limit era and reached No. 22 in the United States.
5. ‘I Miss My Homies’ Showed Another Side of No Limit
While No Limit became famous for its aggressive street records, “I Miss My Homies” showed the label could make emotional records as well. The song featured Pimp C, Silkk The Shocker, Mo B. Dick, O’Dell and Sons of Funk and reached No. 25 in the U.S.
6. The Album Was Loaded With No Limit Talent
Ghetto D functioned as much as a showcase for the No Limit roster as it did a Master P solo album. Silkk The Shocker, C-Murder, Mia X, Mystikal, Fiend, Mac, Kane & Abel, Mr. Serv-On, Sons of Funk and others appeared throughout the 19-track project.
7. Pimp C Appeared on the Album
No Limit’s Southern connections extended beyond New Orleans. UGK legend Pimp C appeared on “I Miss My Homies,” giving the album another link to the Gulf Coast sound that was exploding during the late 1990s.
8. ‘Burbons and Lacs’ Sampled Marvin Gaye
One of the album’s smoothest records, “Burbons and Lacs,” featuring Silkk The Shocker, Lil Gotti and Mo B. Dick, used a sample from Marvin Gaye’s classic “Let’s Get It On.”
9. ‘I Miss My Homies’ Sampled The O’Jays
The emotional foundation of “I Miss My Homies” came in part from its use of “Brandy” by The O’Jays. The sample helped give the record the soulful backdrop that separated it from many of the album’s harder songs.
10. ‘Ghetto D’ Sampled Eric B. & Rakim
The title track reached back to an earlier era of Hip-Hop. “Ghetto D,” featuring C-Murder and Silkk The Shocker, sampled Eric B. & Rakim’s “Eric B. Is President,” connecting No Limit’s late-’90s Southern sound to one of rap’s foundational records.
11. The Album Eventually Went Triple Platinum
The commercial success of Ghetto D continued long after its initial chart run. The album was certified 3× Platinum on August 4, 2006, with SoundScan sales listed at more than 3.18 million copies.
12. ‘Ghetto D’ Helped Define the No Limit Formula
Look at the track listing and you can see one of the biggest reasons Ghetto D became such an important No Limit album. Master P rarely operated alone. Nearly every song featured other members of the label’s expanding roster, allowing listeners who bought a Master P album to also become familiar with Silkk The Shocker, C-Murder, Mia X, Fiend, Mac, Mystikal and others.
Twenty-nine years later, Ghetto D remains a snapshot of No Limit at the moment the tank became impossible for mainstream Hip-Hop to ignore. From “I Miss My Homies” and “Make ’Em Say Uhh!” to the album’s deep roster of future No Limit favorites, the project helped establish a blueprint for Southern rap labels that wanted to build their own stars, their own identity and their own business empire.
