A pointy couch in front of the IKEA at Vienna’s Westbahnhof has been attracting attention since September 1st. Behind it is a current survey by Marketagent on behalf of oeticket. It shows how much the leisure habits of many people in Austria have shifted towards staying at home. Home is the First Choice for Many According to the study, six out of ten respondents aged between 14 and 45 say they have become too comfortable to go out and experience things. Two-thirds have also become more selective about what they leave the house for. The difference between city and countryside is particularly noticeable. In cities, 45 percent describe themselves as comfortable, while in the countryside it is 30 percent. Among the most popular leisure activities, meeting friends or family at home tops the list with 43.2 percent. This is followed by staying comfortably at home with 39.1 percent. Going out to eat accounts for 38.5 percent, and doing sports oneself accounts for 36.1 percent. Costs and Fatigue Hinder Going Out The reasons for staying at home are varied according to the study. 55.3 percent cite costs or inflation. 38.3 percent want to avoid crowds and hustle, 37.5 percent cite fatigue. Comfort also plays an important role with 36.8 percent. Family and caregiving duties are mentioned by 21 percent. 18.4 percent lack suitable company. Only 13.8 percent say there is little or no suitable leisure offer in their area. This Couch is Meant to Encourage Getting Up oeticket is responding to the results with the so-called „Uncomfy Couch“. The installation is located from September 1st to 3rd at Europaplatz in front of the IKEA Vienna Westbahnhof. With pointy elements, it is symbolically meant to make one’s comfort zone uncomfortable. There will be free live concerts on three evenings. On September 1st, Sofie Royer will perform solo at 6 PM. On September 2nd, also at 6 PM, SODL will perform solo. The finale will be on September 3rd at 6 PM with Marley Wildthing. Admission to all three performances is free. Christoph Klingler, CEO of EVENTIM Austria, stated according to oeticket, that the initiative aims to encourage people to step out of their comfort zone without a raised finger. Study Based on 522 Respondents For the study, a total of 522 people aged between 14 and 45 were surveyed via the Marketagent Online Access Panel in the summer of 2026. The sample is representative of the Austrian population within the defined target group and was weighted. The information on personal attitudes towards leisure behavior is based on the Top-2-Box. The remaining values were collected through multiple choice. (VIENNA.AT) This article has been automatically translated, read the original article here.
