101 Fascinating Facts About London Theatre: Playhouses, Performers, Backstage Secrets and a London Theatre Trivia Challenge brings together more than four centuries of London theatrical history in an accessible collection of facts, stories and curiosities. The book ranges from Shakespeare’s playhouses and the development of London’s earliest theatres to the great West End venues of today. Along the way, it looks at famous performers, record-breaking productions, unusual theatre architecture, stage technology, theatrical superstitions, ghost stories, wartime performances and some of the more unexpected events to have taken place both on stage and behind the scenes. Among the subjects explored are the long history of Theatre Royal Drury Lane, the technological innovations of the London Coliseum, the origins of some of London’s best-known theatres, extraordinary West End records and the stories behind theatrical traditions that have survived for generations. The book also includes facts about performers whose careers have become closely associated with London theatre, together with some less familiar stories from theatrical history. Each entry includes a short question and answer, and the book concludes with a London Theatre Trivia Challenge, giving readers a chance to see how much they remember from the 101 facts. Considerable effort has been made to check the historical claims in the book, with a detailed References and Resources section directing readers to sources including Historic England, the Victoria and Albert Museum, Shakespeare’s Globe, the Old Vic, Sadler’s Wells, the Royal Shakespeare Company, Guinness World Records and other theatre and historical organisations. Readers are also invited to report any corrections or additional information through the 101 Fascinating Facts Facebook page, helping future editions remain as accurate and up to date as possible. 101 Fascinating Facts About London Theatre is currently available for Amazon Kindle at an introductory price of £0.99.
