История евреев в мусульманском мире: от сосуществования до трагического раскола

Key Takeaways: The essay rejects both an unbroken “Islamic golden age” and a story of constant Jewish persecution. Jewish life under Muslim rule was structured coexistence: dhimma mixed protection with legal inequality; practice often lagged doctrine. Jews were not modern citizens, nor passive victims—they ran courts, schools, trade and diplomacy while remaining legally distinct (Cohen, Goitein, Stillman). The Mediterranean city is the laboratory: Geniza Cairo, Alexandria, Tunis, Jerusalem, Ottoman Istanbul and Salonika show markets crossing quarters. Morocco is the deepest case—mellahs that were not European ghettos, Fez/Marrakesh/Sefrou/Tiznit, Judeo-Arabic and Judeo-Amazigh life, shared saints, food and music. Mohammed V and Vichy: real restrictions under the Protectorate, a different stance than Nazi racial genocide; do not collapse the two. 19th–20th century citizenship, colonialism (Crémieux in Algeria), Zionism and 1948 remade belonging; mass Moroccan emigration emptied neighborhoods but moved the culture to Israel and the diaspora. Heritage work should keep contradiction—conviviality and hierarchy. Lesson: difference without total separation; memory can aid dialogue but cannot replace politics. Introduction: A Shared History Beyond Simplistic Binaries The history of Jews in the lands of Islam is one of the most complex chapters in the history of the Mediterranean, the Middle East and North Africa. It is a history that resists simple categorization because it contains, within the same broad civilizational framework, protection and discrimination, autonomy and subordination, prosperity and insecurity, intellectual collaboration and theological disagreement, cultural intimacy and episodes of violence. Jews lived for centuries in societies governed predominantly by Muslims, developed institutions of their own, participated in commercial and intellectual networks, contributed to courtly and diplomatic life, adopted the languages and cultural practices of their surroundings, and simultaneously preserved distinctive religious traditions. Their experience cannot therefore be adequately understood either through the romantic image of an uninterrupted Islamic tolerance or through the equally reductive narrative of perpetual Jewish persecution. Both approaches flatten a historical reality that was much more varied, contingent and human. The central argument of this essay is that Jewish life in the lands of Islam should be approached as a history of structured coexistence. This coexistence was rarely egalitarian in the modern sense. The classical Islamic legal order distinguished Muslims from protected non-Muslim communities, and Jews and Christians occupied a legally differentiated position under the system conventionally associated with dhimma. Yet legal hierarchy did not prevent Jews from becoming deeply embedded in Muslim societies. They inhabited cities, marketplaces, ports and rural settlements; traded with Muslims and Christians; served rulers as physicians, translators and diplomats; participated in intellectual life; developed Arabic, Judeo-Arabic, Judeo-Spanish and Judeo-Amazigh cultural expressions; and contributed to the formation of local cuisines, music, crafts and commercial practices. The history of Jewish-Muslim relations is therefore better described through the interaction of difference and proximity than through the opposition between separation and assimilation. This distinction is particularly important because the political vocabulary of the modern nation-state is often projected backward onto societies that operated according to fundamentally different principles. To describe Jews in medieval or early modern Muslim societies simply as “citizens” is historically imprecise, because citizenship as a universal legal status emerged much later. But to describe them merely as passive and persecuted subjects is equally misleading. Jewish communities possessed communal institutions, religious leadership, property, commercial networks and forms of internal autonomy. Their political and social agency was substantial even when their legal status was unequal (Cohen, 1994; Goitein, 1967–1993; Stillman, 1979). The Mediterranean provides an especially fruitful framework for examining this complexity. Jewish communities in Cairo, Alexandria, Jerusalem, Damascus, Tunis, Algiers, Fez, Marrakesh, Sefrou, Tiznit, Istanbul and Salonika belonged to different political systems and historical periods, yet they were connected through commerce, migration, scholarship, pilgrimage and family networks. The Cairo Geniza, for example, provides extraordinary documentary evidence of Jewish communities whose lives were embedded in the commercial and social structures of the medieval Mediterranean. Goitein’s monumental reconstruction of this world demonstrates that Jewish economic and family life cannot be separated from the wider social history of the Islamic Mediterranean (Goitein, 1967–1993). Modern scholarship has nevertheless urged caution against assuming that Jewish documentary evidence automatically represents the whole Islamic economy; the Geniza is an extraordinarily rich but specifically situated archive (Ackerman-Lieberman, 2014).  Morocco constitutes one of the most revealing cases within this wider history. Jewish communities were present across the country for many centuries and became deeply incorporated into Moroccan economic, cultural and political life. They lived in imperial cities and small towns, in mellahs and outside them, in Arabophone and Amazigh-speaking environments, and along commercial routes linking the Atlantic, Mediterranean, Sahara and sub-Saharan Africa. Their history includes the development of distinctive forms of Judeo-Moroccan culture, extensive participation in commerce, relations with the monarchy, diplomatic activity, shared saint-veneration practices, musical exchange and a remarkable degree of cultural interpenetration. At the same time, Moroccan Jews experienced legal differentiation, economic restrictions, political insecurity and episodes of violence. The historical record therefore calls for neither celebration nor condemnation in the abstract, but for analysis. The Islamic Legal Framework: Dhimma, Protection, and Hierarchy The classical status of non-Muslims under Islamic rule must be placed at the center of any serious discussion of Jewish life in Muslim societies. The category of dhimmi, derived from dhimma, referred broadly to protected non-Muslim subjects, especially Jews and Christians as ahl al-kitâb, or “People of the Book.” The system developed through Islamic jurisprudence and political practice and varied considerably across time and place. It provided mechanisms through which non-Muslim communities could maintain their religious institutions and communal life while acknowledging the political supremacy of the Muslim ruler and accepting a differentiated legal status (Friedmann, 2003; Stillman, 1979). The most important analytical point is that dhimma combined protection with inequality. Jews were not modern citizens enjoying equal political rights. Restrictions could concern taxation, public office, military participation, dress, public religious expression, construction or repair of religious buildings and other areas, although the actual enforcement of such provisions varied enormously. Jurists could formulate restrictive norms that rulers applied selectively, ignored or modified according to political circumstances. Consequently, there was often a considerable gap between legal doctrine and social practice (Cohen, 1994; Safran, 2013). This gap is crucial. A legal framework should not be treated as an exact description of everyday life. A community might be legally subordinate but socially prosperous; protected but vulnerable; autonomous in religious matters but dependent upon the ruler; economically influential but politically restricted. The history of the dhimmî is therefore a history of negotiated status rather than a single fixed condition. Recent scholarship on al-Andalus emphasizes precisely this complexity, showing that juristic discourse attempted to regulate boundaries while simultaneously accommodating forms of intimacy and interaction between Muslims and non-Muslims (Safran, 2013).  The concept of dhimma should consequently neither be idealized nor demonized. It cannot legitimately be presented as evidence of modern religious equality. At the same time, it should not be interpreted as a permanent state of persecution. The fact that Jewish communities survived, reproduced themselves institutionally and produced sophisticated religious and intellectual cultures over many centuries demonstrates that the system offered real—if unequal—spaces for communal continuity. The distinction between tolerance and equality is particularly important. A ruler who permits a Jewish community to maintain synagogues, courts and schools is not necessarily treating Jews as equal citizens. But the absence of equality does not mean the absence of meaningful protection. Historical analysis requires the capacity to hold these two propositions simultaneously. Jewish Agency Within an Unequal Political Order Jewish communities were not simply passive recipients of Islamic policies. They developed sophisticated mechanisms of self-government, charity, education, religious authority and economic organization. Communal leaders negotiated with rulers, judges and municipal authorities; wealthy families financed institutions; merchants developed transregional partnerships; rabbis interpreted Jewish law within changing social circumstances; and ordinary families created strategies for navigating the opportunities and constraints of their environments. The history of Jewish agency is especially visible in the development of communal institutions. Jewish communities often maintained synagogues, schools, charitable organizations, burial societies and internal leadership structures. These institutions provided continuity across generations and enabled Jewish communities to maintain religious identity while participating in the surrounding society. The existence of communal autonomy also complicates the idea that Jews were simply isolated minorities. Internal institutions did not eliminate external interaction. On the contrary, the more developed the community became, the more systematically it interacted with state authorities and neighboring populations. Jewish communal leaders served as intermediaries between the community and the ruler; merchants negotiated with Muslim partners; physicians served Muslim patients; craftsmen supplied Muslim consumers; and translators mediated across linguistic boundaries. Jewish history in Muslim societies should therefore be understood through a double movement: inward communal cohesion and outward social integration. This duality was one of the defining characteristics of Jewish life in the medieval and early modern Mediterranean. The Mediterranean City as a Laboratory of Coexistence The city offers perhaps the most revealing scale at which to examine Jewish-Muslim relations. The Mediterranean city brought together merchants, artisans, officials, scholars, sailors, pilgrims, laborers and migrants. Religious communities could occupy distinct quarters, but the economic and social life of the city continually crossed those boundaries. The Jewish quarter was therefore rarely a completely self-contained world. Cairo and Fustat provide extraordinary evidence of this interdependence. The Cairo Geniza contains contracts, letters, commercial documents, legal records and personal correspondence that illuminate Jewish life from the medieval period. Goitein’s reconstruction shows Jewish merchants operating across an interconnected Mediterranean world extending from Egypt toward North Africa, the Levant, the Indian Ocean and southern Europe (Goitein, 1967–1993). The documents reveal not only commerce but marriage, family disputes, charity, illness, migration and ordinary urban life.  The importance of the Geniza lies precisely in its human scale. It does not merely document “Jewish civilization”; it records people negotiating prices, arranging marriages, requesting assistance, complaining about relatives, worrying about debts, arranging travel and maintaining relationships across geographical distances. The Mediterranean emerges not as an abstract geopolitical space but as a network of ordinary human connections. Alexandria represented another crucial Jewish-Mediterranean environment. Its position between Egypt and the sea made it a commercial crossroads where Jewish merchants could participate in exchanges linking North Africa, the Levant and Europe. Jewish commercial activity was not an isolated “Jewish economy” but part of a larger Mediterranean system in which Muslim, Jewish and Christian merchants interacted. Tunis developed comparable forms of Jewish urban integration. The city’s Jewish community participated in commerce, crafts and regional exchange while maintaining religious institutions. The same can be observed, in different configurations, in Algiers, Oran and Tripoli. The North African Mediterranean was therefore a region of overlapping commercial and cultural networks rather than a set of hermetically separated religious communities. Jerusalem represented a different kind of urban experience. Here religious identity was inseparable from sacred geography. Jewish, Muslim and Christian communities shared a city whose religious significance exceeded ordinary urban life. Competition over sacred space could generate conflict, but the city also produced extensive forms of interaction among communities. Jerusalem demonstrates that coexistence becomes particularly complex when religious symbolism, political sovereignty and urban life converge. Damascus similarly illustrates the importance of urban embeddedness. Its position between Anatolia, Iraq, Arabia and Palestine made it a major center of commerce and administration. Jewish communities participated in this environment while maintaining their own religious and communal structures. The Ottoman Mediterranean introduced another significant configuration. Istanbul became a major center of Sephardic Jewish life following the expulsion of Jews from Iberia in 1492. Salonika became one of the most important centers of Sephardic culture in the eastern Mediterranean. The experience of Salonika is particularly striking because Jews constituted a major component of the city’s population and played an important role in commerce, crafts and urban culture (Benbassa & Rodrigue, 2000). These cases demonstrate that Jewish history in Muslim societies cannot be reduced to minority isolation: in some cities Jews were among the principal components of urban economic and cultural life. The Mediterranean city thus emerges as a space of institutional differentiation and everyday interdependence. People could remain Muslim, Jewish or Christian while sharing streets, markets, professions and commercial interests. Religious boundaries mattered, but they did not prevent social proximity. Commerce and the Jewish Contribution to Mediterranean Exchange Commerce was one of the principal mechanisms through which Jewish communities became integrated into Muslim societies. Jewish merchants developed networks based on family, communal and professional relationships extending across political frontiers. These networks could be particularly effective because merchants possessed trust mechanisms that facilitated transactions over long distances. The Cairo Geniza provides some of the clearest evidence. Its commercial correspondence documents partnerships, agency arrangements, debts, shipments, prices and business negotiations. Goitein’s work demonstrates that Jewish merchants were participants in a sophisticated Mediterranean commercial system, while later scholarship has emphasized the need to avoid treating their networks as completely separate from Muslim commercial structures (Ackerman-Lieberman, 2014).  Jewish commercial activity was especially significant because Jews frequently occupied intermediary positions. They could connect rural producers with urban markets, coastal ports with inland towns, and Muslim societies with European commercial networks. Such roles were not uniquely Jewish, but in particular historical circumstances Jewish merchants possessed linguistic, familial and geographical advantages. Morocco offers an especially rich example. Jewish merchants participated in exchanges involving agricultural products, textiles, metals, jewelry, leather and other commodities. In southern Morocco, Jewish commercial networks connected Amazigh-speaking rural populations with urban markets. Jewish merchants could therefore function as brokers between different linguistic, geographical and cultural environments. Commercial life also produced interpersonal familiarity. Repeated economic interaction generated trust and recognition. A Muslim customer did not necessarily encounter a Jewish merchant as an abstract religious “other”; he encountered a person with whom he negotiated prices, exchanged goods and perhaps developed a long-term relationship. Economic life could thus soften social boundaries without eliminating them. The marketplace was consequently one of the principal institutions of conviviality. The term should not imply perfect harmony. Markets generate competition, conflict and inequality as well as cooperation. Yet they also create interdependence. Jewish-Muslim commercial relations demonstrate that coexistence was not simply an ideological proposition but an economic necessity. Craftsmanship, Professions, and Everyday Economic Integration Jewish economic participation extended well beyond long-distance commerce. Jews worked as artisans, goldsmiths, silversmiths, tailors, leatherworkers, textile producers, shopkeepers, physicians and other professionals. Occupational specialization varied by region and period, and it should not be interpreted as an inherent feature of Jewish identity. Rather, it resulted from historical combinations of opportunity, restriction, family tradition, market demand and communal organization. Jewish artisans often served Muslim customers. Jewelry provides a particularly revealing example because precious-metal work required technical skill and commercial trust. Jewish craftsmen could become indispensable to local economies while remaining members of a legally distinct religious community. Physicians occupied an even more distinctive position. Medical knowledge frequently crossed religious boundaries because the practical value of healing could transcend confessional distinctions. Jewish physicians could therefore serve Muslim rulers and elites, creating relationships that placed them close to political power. Yet exceptional Jewish figures should not be confused with the general condition of Jewish populations. The presence of Jewish physicians at court does not prove equality; the wealth of Jewish merchants does not eliminate legal discrimination; and the influence of individual Jewish diplomats does not mean that Jewish communities possessed political sovereignty. This distinction between individual prominence and collective status is essential for avoiding both romanticization and victimization. Jewish agency was real, but it operated within structures that could constrain it. Language, Translation, and Cultural Entanglement Perhaps nowhere is cultural integration more visible than in language. Jews living in Arabic-speaking societies frequently became highly proficient in Arabic and used it for commerce, philosophy, medicine, correspondence and everyday communication. Judeo-Arabic emerged as a major cultural form, using Hebrew script to write varieties of Arabic and allowing Jewish intellectuals to participate deeply in the Arabic-speaking world. The intellectual achievements of medieval Jewish philosophers cannot be separated from this linguistic environment. Moses Maimonides, for example, wrote major works in Arabic and participated in the intellectual traditions of the Islamic world. His philosophical and medical writings demonstrate that Jewish intellectual history and Islamic intellectual history were not isolated traditions but overlapping worlds. This phenomenon illustrates a broader principle: cultural borrowing does not necessarily imply religious assimilation. Jews could adopt Arabic language, literary conventions and philosophical concepts while maintaining Jewish theology and ritual. Cultural identity was layered rather than singular. Morocco developed its own complex linguistic landscape. Judeo-Arabic was widespread among Arabic-speaking Jews, while northern Moroccan Jewish communities developed Haketia, a Judeo-Spanish language influenced by Arabic. Amazigh-speaking Jewish communities preserved or participated in Amazigh linguistic environments. Language therefore became an archive of historical contact. The linguistic history of Moroccan Jewry is particularly revealing because it demonstrates that Jewish identity was profoundly local. Moroccan Jews were not simply Jews who happened to live in Morocco; they developed specifically Moroccan forms of Jewish culture. Al-Andalus and the Question of Convivencia No discussion of Jews in Muslim lands can avoid al-Andalus. The medieval Islamic Iberian Peninsula has acquired extraordinary symbolic significance in modern discussions of Jewish-Muslim relations. It is often described as a “Golden Age” of Jewish culture, a period in which Jews allegedly lived in perfect harmony with Muslims and Christians. This image contains an important historical truth but becomes misleading when transformed into a generalized myth. Jewish intellectual and cultural life in al-Andalus was indeed extraordinary. Jewish philosophers, poets, physicians and scholars participated in an intellectual environment shaped by Arabic philosophy, science, literature and theology. Hebrew poetry experienced a remarkable development, while Jewish thinkers engaged deeply with Islamic intellectual traditions. Yet al-Andalus was not a society without hierarchy or conflict. Jews and Christians occupied differentiated legal positions, and relations between communities changed according to political circumstances. Modern scholarship has emphasized that convivencia should be understood as a historically contingent pattern of interaction rather than a permanent condition of harmony (Cohen, 1994; Safran, 2013). The very concept of convivencia becomes more useful when understood dynamically. Communities could cooperate economically, exchange knowledge and participate in shared cultural worlds while maintaining religious boundaries. They could also experience political conflict, persecution or violence. The same society could therefore contain conviviality and exclusion. This is not a contradiction. It is the normal complexity of human societies. Jewish cultural flourishing in al-Andalus should thus be understood neither as proof of an inherently tolerant Islamic civilization nor as an insignificant anomaly. It was the product of specific political, economic and intellectual circumstances. The Jewish experience became particularly productive when political authorities valued scholarship, commerce and administrative expertise and when urban society permitted extensive interaction. The al-Andalus experience also had a long afterlife. The Jewish communities expelled from Iberia in the late fifteenth century carried their languages, religious traditions and memories into North Africa and the Ottoman Empire. Sephardic culture subsequently became one of the major cultural components of Mediterranean Jewish civilization (Benbassa & Rodrigue, 2000). The Sephardic Transformation of the Mediterranean The expulsion of Jews from Spain and Portugal transformed the geography of Jewish life. Sephardic refugees settled in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, the Ottoman Empire, Italy and other regions. Their arrival created new cultural syntheses. Sephardic Jews brought Iberian linguistic and cultural traditions into societies that already possessed long-established Jewish communities. Morocco provides a particularly interesting example because Sephardic Jews encountered indigenous Jewish populations with different historical trajectories. The result was not a simple replacement of one Jewish culture by another but a process of interaction, differentiation and eventual synthesis. The Sephardic experience also demonstrates the interconnectedness of Jewish and Muslim Mediterranean history. The expulsion from Christian Iberia did not simply produce a “Jewish migration”; it redistributed cultural capital throughout Muslim territories. Jewish refugees became merchants, scholars, physicians and artisans in their new environments. Ottoman rulers recognized the economic and intellectual value of these populations and incorporated them into urban life. The history of Sephardic migration consequently challenges civilizational narratives that isolate Christian Europe from the Muslim Mediterranean. Jewish communities moved between these worlds, carrying knowledge, languages, commercial connections and cultural practices with them. The Moroccan Jewish Experience: Deep Roots and Local Belonging Morocco occupies a special place in the history of Jewish-Muslim relations because Jewish communities became deeply integrated into the country’s social fabric over a very long period. Their history encompasses ancient settlement, Islamic conquest, medieval dynasties, the arrival of Sephardic Jews, the development of mellahs, commercial expansion, European colonialism, independence and mass migration to Israel and elsewhere. Moroccan Jewish identity was never uniform. It included urban Jews in Fez, Marrakesh, Meknes, Rabat and Casablanca; rural Jews living among Amazigh communities; communities in southern Morocco; Jews of the Rif; and populations linked to Mediterranean and Atlantic commerce. The diversity of these communities makes it impossible to speak of a single Moroccan Jewish experience. What connected them was a common relationship with the Moroccan political order and the broader Moroccan cultural environment. Jewish communities developed forms of belonging that were simultaneously religious, communal and territorial. They were Jews, but they were also inhabitants of specific Moroccan towns and regions whose customs, languages and economic structures shaped their lives. This local belonging is essential for understanding the profound sense of loss associated with Jewish emigration in the twentieth century. When Moroccan Jews left, they did not simply leave a country; they left particular neighborhoods, streets, markets, cemeteries, shrines, family houses and social relationships. The Mellah: Protection, Segregation, and Urban Integration The mellah is one of the most recognizable institutions of Moroccan Jewish history. Jewish quarters existed in several Moroccan cities, and their functions varied considerably. The mellah could provide security, communal organization and proximity to synagogues and institutions, but it could also become associated with overcrowding, poverty and vulnerability. It would therefore be misleading to equate the Moroccan mellah automatically with the European ghetto. The historical origins and legal functions differed, and the meaning of the mellah changed according to political and urban circumstances. In some settings it served as a protected Jewish quarter; in others it became a site of social marginalization. Fez offers perhaps the best-known example. Its mellah became a dense Jewish neighborhood containing synagogues, schools, shops, workshops and homes. Jewish life developed there with considerable institutional vitality, but residents remained economically dependent upon the wider city. Jewish artisans needed Muslim customers; merchants required access to broader markets; and communal leaders maintained relations with the Makhzen. The mellah therefore illustrates the central paradox of Moroccan Jewish urban life: spatial differentiation did not mean social isolation. The same pattern can be observed in Marrakesh and other cities. Jewish quarters created communal cohesion while commercial life continually carried their residents beyond their boundaries. The city was shared even when residential space was differentiated. The Fez mellah has emphasized precisely this dual character: it was both an important center of Moroccan Jewish communal life and an integral component of the broader urban history of Fez (Chtatou, 2022, 2025). These studies should, however, be situated within the larger historiography of Moroccan Jewry rather than treated as an independent interpretive framework. Fez: Jewish Life in an Imperial Capital Fez provides perhaps the richest Moroccan example of Jewish-Muslim urban interaction. As one of Morocco’s major intellectual and political centers, the city brought together scholars, artisans, merchants, diplomats and officials. Jewish inhabitants participated in this urban economy while maintaining their own communal institutions. Jewish commercial activity in Fez was connected to regional and international networks. Artisans produced goods for Muslim consumers, merchants participated in markets, and certain Jewish families developed relationships with European commercial interests. Jewish proximity to the royal court could also provide opportunities for diplomatic and commercial mediation. Yet Fez also demonstrates the vulnerability of minority communities. Episodes of unrest could expose Jewish neighborhoods to violence, and economic or political crises could disproportionately affect minority populations. The history of the Fez Jewish community therefore contains both extraordinary cultural vitality and moments of insecurity. The historical importance of Fez lies precisely in this coexistence of contradictory experiences. A community can be deeply integrated into a city’s life and nevertheless remain vulnerable to political change. Marrakesh, Sefrou, Debdou, and the Diversity of Moroccan Jewish Life Marrakesh developed a major Jewish presence connected to the city’s commercial and political importance. Jewish merchants participated in regional networks extending toward southern Morocco and trans-Saharan routes. Jewish artisans and shopkeepers interacted constantly with Muslim customers and neighboring communities. Sefrou offers a different scale of analysis. Its relatively smaller urban environment permits a closer examination of everyday relations. Jewish and Muslim inhabitants encountered one another in markets, workplaces and neighborhood life. Jewish merchants participated in the exchange between rural producers and the town’s market, while social relations extended beyond economic transactions. The history of Sefrou demonstrates why microhistory matters. Large imperial cities can make intercommunal interaction appear abstract; smaller towns reveal how relationships were actually lived. People knew one another personally, developed reputations and sometimes maintained relationships that crossed religious boundaries. Such proximity did not eliminate conflict, but it created a dense web of familiarity. Debdou represents yet another form of Moroccan Jewish history. Its Jewish community became known for religious and intellectual vitality and developed in a distinctive geographical environment. Its history reminds us that Moroccan Jewish civilization was not confined to the imperial capitals. Tiznit and the wider Souss region provide especially important evidence for Jewish-Amazigh relations. Jewish merchants lived among Amazigh populations, participated in regional commerce and developed linguistic and cultural adaptations to local environments. The history of these communities reveals a dimension of Moroccan Judaism that is often overlooked when the narrative is centered exclusively on Fez, Marrakesh and Casablanca. The Judeo-Amazigh Cultural Substratum The relationship between Jews and Amazigh populations in Morocco is one of the most fascinating and least adequately understood aspects of North African history. Jewish communities existed in numerous Amazigh-speaking regions and frequently participated in local economies. They adopted local linguistic forms, interacted with tribal institutions and shared elements of material culture. The term “Judeo-Amazigh” should nevertheless be used carefully. It refers to cultural and historical interaction rather than necessarily to a single homogeneous ethnic category. Claims that all North African Jews were originally Amazigh converts, or that Jewish and Amazigh identities were historically identical, go beyond what the evidence can securely establish. What can be demonstrated more confidently is sustained cultural interaction. Jewish communities could speak Amazigh languages, adopt regional customs, participate in local commerce and develop forms of social belonging within Amazigh environments. These interactions contributed to the extraordinary cultural diversity of Moroccan Jewry (Chtatou, 2020, 2022, 2026). This history has implications for Moroccan national identity. If Jewish history is recognized as part of Moroccan history, and Amazigh history is recognized as another foundational dimension of Morocco, then Judeo-Amazigh interaction becomes a particularly powerful illustration of Morocco’s plural civilizational formation. Shared Saints and Sacred Geography One of the most remarkable features of Moroccan religious culture was the existence of Jewish saints whose shrines could attract Muslim visitors, alongside Muslim saints whose sanctuaries could become meaningful to Jewish inhabitants. This phenomenon has been documented in different Moroccan regions and provides evidence of popular religious practices that crossed formal communal boundaries. Such practices should not be described too quickly as “syncretism.” Jewish and Muslim participants generally retained their distinct theological identities. What they shared was a repertoire of practices involving pilgrimage, blessing, healing, vows and reverence for holy figures. The shrine became a meeting point between distinct religious worlds. People could approach it for different reasons and interpret its significance through their own traditions. The resulting religious landscape was not one of theological fusion but of shared sacred geography. Research on Moroccan Jewish-Muslim saint traditions illustrates the importance of studying popular religion alongside formal theology (Ben-Ami, 1990; Chtatou, 2020). The former often reveals forms of intercommunal interaction that legal texts cannot capture. The persistence of these traditions also demonstrates that coexistence was not simply a matter of political administration. It was embedded in everyday religious life. Music, Cuisine, Dress, and Material Culture Cultural exchange occurred most visibly in ordinary life. Moroccan Jewish music developed within the broader Moroccan and Andalusian musical environment. Jewish musicians participated in traditions that were not exclusively Jewish, while Jewish liturgical music retained its specific religious character. The result was a cultural world in which musical forms crossed communal boundaries without eliminating religious distinctions (Chtatou, 2022). Cuisine provides another powerful example. Moroccan Jews and Muslims shared ingredients, agricultural environments and culinary techniques. Jewish dietary laws created significant distinctions, but these existed within a broader Moroccan culinary universe. Jewish families developed dishes that were recognizably Moroccan while conforming to Jewish religious requirements. Architecture likewise demonstrates cultural entanglement. Moroccan Jewish homes and synagogues incorporated local materials and architectural forms. The buildings were Jewish in function but Moroccan in aesthetic environment. Such cultural exchange is particularly significant because it operates below the level of political ideology. People borrow food, music, language and architectural forms without necessarily discussing the ideological implications of doing so. Cultural convergence is therefore often more durable than political agreements. Jewish Diplomacy and the Moroccan Court Jewish participation in diplomacy represents one of the most visible forms of Jewish political agency in Morocco. Certain Jewish individuals served as intermediaries between the Moroccan monarchy and European states or commercial interests. Their linguistic skills, commercial networks and familiarity with European institutions made them valuable in diplomatic negotiations. This role was especially significant during the nineteenth century, when Morocco faced increasing European pressure. Jewish diplomats could operate across linguistic and cultural boundaries and help facilitate communication. Again, however, individual diplomatic prominence should not be interpreted as evidence of general political equality. The fact that a Jewish individual could exercise considerable influence demonstrates the flexibility of the political system but does not eliminate the structural distinction between Muslims and Jews. The Jewish diplomat thus represents the paradox of minority agency: proximity to power could generate extraordinary opportunities while leaving the wider community dependent upon the ruler’s protection. Jews Under Colonialism: A New Political Landscape European colonialism transformed Jewish-Muslim relations in North Africa. French and Spanish colonial institutions introduced new legal, educational and economic structures that changed the relationship between Jewish communities, Muslim populations and political authorities. Algeria offers the most dramatic example. The Crémieux Decree of 1870 granted French citizenship to Algerian Jews while the majority Muslim population remained outside the same citizenship framework. The result was a colonial differentiation that profoundly altered intercommunal relations. Morocco developed differently under the French Protectorate. Jews remained formally connected to the Sultan’s sovereignty while living under a colonial administrative regime. European education and economic opportunities expanded for some Jewish populations, while traditional forms of integration with Muslim society were transformed. Colonial modernity therefore created new possibilities and new divisions. It did not simply liberate Jewish communities from traditional constraints. It also inserted them into new political hierarchies. The colonial period is consequently indispensable for understanding the later transformation of Moroccan Jewish identity. European education, urbanization, economic modernization and Zionist networks increasingly offered alternative forms of belonging. Mohammed V, Vichy, and the Moroccan Jewish Community The experience of Moroccan Jews during the Second World War requires particular historical precision. Vichy France imposed anti-Jewish legislation in the French Protectorates of North Africa. In Morocco, Jews were subjected to restrictions affecting education, professions, property and residence. Yet the Moroccan situation differed in important respects from the Nazi genocidal system in Europe. The Sultan, Mohammed V, occupied a complicated position within the Protectorate system. Historical scholarship indicates that the Moroccan authorities used various means to delay or moderate the application of some Vichy measures, and Mohammed V publicly maintained a position favorable to his Jewish subjects. At the same time, anti-Jewish regulations were imposed, and Moroccan Jews suffered real discrimination and material hardship. The historical record therefore requires nuance rather than hagiography.  This episode has acquired considerable symbolic significance in contemporary Moroccan memory. The image of Mohammed V protecting Moroccan Jews from Nazi persecution has become part of the country’s national narrative. Yet historians should distinguish symbolic memory from institutional history. Morocco was under French Protectorate authority, Vichy legislation did apply, and Jewish Moroccans were affected by restrictions. What distinguishes the Moroccan experience is the political and moral stance adopted by the Sultan and the limits placed upon the implementation of certain measures. The comparison with Nazi Germany must also be made carefully. Vichy antisemitism and Nazi racial ideology belonged to the broader history of European antisemitism, but the systematic extermination of European Jewry by Nazi Germany was a genocidal project of a fundamentally different scale and ideological character. Nazi policy culminated in the deliberate murder of approximately six million Jews. The Holocaust cannot be collapsed into the category of ordinary religious discrimination or even conventional persecution (Friedländer, 2007; Longerich, 2010). It is therefore historically defensible to say that Islamic civilization did not develop an ideological project equivalent to the Nazi extermination program. But this observation must not be converted into a claim that Muslim societies were uniformly tolerant or incapable of anti-Jewish violence. Historical seriousness requires both propositions to remain visible. From Protected Minority to Modern Citizenship The nineteenth and twentieth centuries fundamentally altered the meaning of minority status. The emergence of nationalism, constitutionalism, secular citizenship and territorial states challenged the older religiously differentiated political order. For Jews, this transformation created both opportunities and uncertainties. Modern citizenship promised legal equality but also demanded new forms of national identification. Jewish communities increasingly had to decide how they related to the emerging nation-state, colonial authority, Zionism and traditional communal structures. In Morocco, this transformation occurred gradually. Jews participated in modern education, commerce and urbanization while maintaining communal institutions. Casablanca, in particular, developed a cosmopolitan Jewish population deeply connected to European commercial and cultural networks. Yet modernity also weakened some of the institutional structures that had previously integrated Jews into Muslim society. European schooling could encourage linguistic and cultural differentiation; economic modernization could change occupational patterns; and Zionist organizations created transnational alternatives to local belonging. Modernity therefore did not simply replace coexistence with equality. It transformed the entire framework within which religious identity operated. Zionism, Israel, and the Mass Departure of Moroccan Jews The creation of Israel in 1948 profoundly changed the political environment of Jewish communities throughout the Muslim world. Moroccan Jews found themselves situated within an increasingly polarized international context. The Arab-Israeli conflict affected perceptions of Jewish identity, while Zionist organizations encouraged emigration and Israel offered a new national destination. Yet the migration of Moroccan Jews cannot be explained by a single cause. Political uncertainty, Zionist mobilization, economic opportunity, family networks, changing social aspirations and the wider regional conflict all played roles. Individual decisions varied considerably (Laskier, 1994). The scale of the migration nevertheless transformed Morocco. A Jewish population that had numbered in the hundreds of thousands at its twentieth-century peak declined dramatically. Jewish neighborhoods lost their inhabitants; commercial networks changed; synagogues became less active; cemeteries and shrines became remnants of communities that had once been vibrant. The departure was therefore not merely a migration. It was a transformation of Moroccan social geography. At the same time, Moroccan Jewish culture did not disappear. It migrated. Families carried Moroccan Arabic, Judeo-Arabic, French, Spanish, Hebrew, recipes, music, religious customs, memories and family traditions to Israel, France, Canada and elsewhere. Moroccan Jews in Israel: From Migration to Diaspora The Moroccan Jewish population in Israel became one of the most important components of Israeli society. Yet Moroccan immigrants did not necessarily experience immediate cultural recognition. Like other Jews from North Africa and the Middle East, they encountered social hierarchies within the new Israeli state that often privileged European Jewish cultural norms. Over time, however, Moroccan Jewish culture became increasingly visible and influential. Moroccan religious traditions, music, cuisine and family practices became integral components of Israeli cultural life. The Moroccan Jewish experience in Israel thus produced a paradox. Migration created physical separation from Morocco but simultaneously strengthened cultural memory. Moroccan identity became something that could be consciously preserved, transmitted and celebrated. This diaspora has subsequently played an important role in relations between Morocco and Israel. Moroccan Jews became cultural intermediaries and sometimes political bridges. Their family connections and memories contributed to the maintenance of informal relationships across political boundaries. Academic work on Moroccan Jews in Israel has examined this transformation as the emergence of a “new diaspora” (Chtatou, 2021). Such research is best situated within the wider scholarship on North African Jewish migration, ethnicity and memory rather than treated as an isolated phenomenon. The Memory of Departure: When Neighbors Became Diaspora The departure of Moroccan Jews produced a distinctive form of historical memory among both Jews and Muslims. Many Moroccan Muslims remember Jewish neighbors, shopkeepers, artisans, teachers and families who left during the second half of the twentieth century. Among Moroccan Jews, memories of Morocco often remain deeply emotional, especially among older generations. This memory should not automatically be interpreted as evidence that the past was harmonious. Nostalgia tends to simplify. People remember friendship more readily than legal inequality; family life more readily than political restrictions; childhood neighborhoods more readily than episodes of violence. Nevertheless, nostalgia itself is historically significant. The fact that many Moroccan Muslims express regret over the departure of Jewish neighbors indicates that Jews were not experienced solely as an abstract religious minority. They were part of the social fabric of everyday Moroccan life. The emotional memory of Jewish departure therefore deserves scholarly attention. It tells us something about the social consequences of demographic change that statistics cannot capture. Jewish-Muslim Conviviality: A Concept Revisited The term conviviality is useful because it emphasizes the lived dimension of coexistence. It does not necessarily imply equality or the absence of conflict. It describes the ability of people belonging to different communities to inhabit a shared social world. Moroccan Jewish-Muslim relations provide numerous examples: shared markets, mixed neighborhoods, professional relationships, linguistic borrowing, culinary exchange, musical interaction and pilgrimage to sacred sites. These practices constituted a form of everyday conviviality. But conviviality should never be transformed into mythology. There were also episodes of violence, forced displacement, discriminatory legislation and social hierarchy. The historical challenge is to understand how conviviality could coexist with inequality. This is perhaps the most important lesson of the Moroccan case. Coexistence does not require equality in order to exist, but equality is required if coexistence is to become a modern democratic ideal. The historian must distinguish the descriptive from the normative. The historical Moroccan experience demonstrates that societies can develop mechanisms for managing profound religious difference long before modern secular citizenship. Yet it also demonstrates the limitations of such mechanisms when legal hierarchy becomes entrenched. Beyond the Myth of the Golden Age There is an understandable desire today to recover periods of Jewish-Muslim coexistence, particularly in an era marked by conflict in the Middle East. The temptation is to imagine a lost golden age in which Muslims and Jews lived together peacefully until modern nationalism destroyed the relationship. This narrative contains an important insight but is historically incomplete. Jewish-Muslim coexistence existed for centuries, but it was not uniformly peaceful. Modern nationalism and Zionism transformed the political environment, but they did not invent every earlier tension. Likewise, the narrative that Jews were always oppressed in Muslim lands is equally inadequate. It cannot explain the extraordinary intellectual, commercial and cultural achievements of Jewish communities in Cairo, Baghdad, Córdoba, Fez, Marrakesh, Salonika or Istanbul. The correct historical position lies between these extremes. Jewish life in Muslim societies was characterized by adaptation, negotiation, cultural creativity and vulnerability. The same society could produce both a brilliant Jewish philosopher and discriminatory legislation. The same ruler could protect Jewish subjects and maintain their subordinate legal status. The same city could contain profound cultural exchange and violent conflict. Historical maturity means accepting these contradictions rather than eliminating them. The Holocaust and the Limits of Historical Comparison The comparison between Jewish experiences under Muslim rule and the Holocaust requires particular care. European Christian societies produced long traditions of anti-Judaism and antisemitism, including expulsions, massacres, forced conversions and discriminatory legislation. These traditions ultimately interacted with modern racial ideology and culminated in Nazi genocide. It would therefore be inaccurate to claim that Christian Europe was simply “antisemitic” while Islamic societies were simply tolerant. Both Christian and Muslim societies produced discrimination and violence against Jews at different times and in different forms. At the same time, it is historically legitimate to emphasize that the Nazi extermination of European Jewry represented an unprecedented genocidal project. Nazi ideology defined Jews through racial categories and sought their systematic physical destruction. The Holocaust therefore cannot be equated with the legal disabilities imposed upon dhimmîs or with isolated episodes of anti-Jewish violence. The distinction matters because historical comparison should clarify rather than instrumentalize. The fact that Islamic law recognized Jews as protected ahl al-kitâb does not make Islamic societies modern models of equality. Conversely, the existence of Jewish suffering under Muslim rulers does not establish an equivalence between Islamic political orders and Nazi genocide. The appropriate conclusion is more modest and more defensible: Jewish experiences in Muslim societies were historically diverse and cannot be reduced to the categories developed by the history of modern European antisemitism. The Moroccan Case During the Second World War as a Historical Test Morocco during the Second World War illustrates this complexity particularly well. Vichy legislation was imposed within the Protectorate, and Moroccan Jews experienced restrictions. Yet the Sultan’s relationship with his Jewish subjects differed significantly from the racialized logic of Nazi Germany. The Sultan’s position became an important component of postwar Moroccan memory. Mohammed V came to symbolize the idea that Moroccan Jewish subjects belonged to the Moroccan political community even when the colonial authorities sought to impose discriminatory legislation. The historical value of this episode is not that it proves an abstract proposition about Islam. Rather, it illustrates how political actors within a Muslim-majority society could respond differently to European antisemitism. The Moroccan monarchy’s actions reveal the importance of local political traditions, dynastic legitimacy and the historical relationship between the Sultan and Jewish communities. This is one reason why the Moroccan case continues to attract attention in contemporary discussions of Jewish-Muslim relations. Morocco’s Jewish Heritage as National Heritage The post-independence recognition of Jewish heritage represents an important transformation in Moroccan historical consciousness. Jewish cemeteries, synagogues, mellahs, museums and cultural traditions increasingly form part of the country’s national heritage. This development has significance beyond tourism. It raises the fundamental question of whether a nation can incorporate into its identity a community that is no longer demographically central. Morocco’s experience suggests that it can. Jewish history is increasingly understood not as the history of foreigners who once lived in Morocco but as part of Moroccan history itself. This recognition also complements the constitutional recognition of Morocco’s plural historical identity. Moroccan civilization cannot be reduced to one cultural source. Arab-Islamic, Amazigh, Jewish, Andalusian, African, Mediterranean and Saharan influences have interacted over centuries. Jewish heritage therefore contributes to a more historically accurate conception of Morocco. The Other Moroccans: Reconsidering National Belonging The expression “the other Moroccans” should not imply that Moroccan Jews were historically outsiders. The paradox is precisely that many were deeply Moroccan while simultaneously belonging to a religious minority. This distinction is important because national belonging and religious identity are not mutually exclusive. A Jewish Moroccan could participate fully in Moroccan language, cuisine, commerce and local customs while maintaining Jewish religious identity. The recognition of Jewish heritage therefore challenges narrow definitions of nationality. It suggests that Moroccan identity historically accommodated multiple religious and cultural communities. My recent work on Jewish and Amazigh heritage has argued that these dimensions should be incorporated into a broader understanding of Moroccan civilization (Chtatou, 2026). This proposition, however, should be read within a much larger historiographical conversation about pluralism, memory and national identity. Jewish Cultural Heritage and the Politics of Memory Heritage is never simply about the past. It is also about the present. When Morocco restores a synagogue, preserves a cemetery or commemorates Jewish history, it is making a contemporary statement about what constitutes the national past. Such heritage work can produce reconciliation, but it can also become selective. A society may celebrate cultural diversity while avoiding difficult questions about discrimination, migration or political responsibility. The most intellectually honest approach is therefore to preserve Jewish heritage together with its complexity. A restored mellah should not be presented merely as evidence of idyllic coexistence. It should tell the story of Jewish life, communal organization, economic contribution, vulnerability and departure. Likewise, Jewish-Muslim conviviality should be remembered without denying episodes of conflict. Memory becomes meaningful when it is capable of containing contradiction. The Mediterranean as a Shared Civilizational Space The comparative evidence from Muslim Mediterranean cities reveals a broader pattern. Jews were neither strangers to Islamic civilization nor simply assimilated into it. They were participants in a shared Mediterranean world whose institutions allowed difference and interaction to coexist. Cairo, Alexandria, Jerusalem, Damascus, Tunis, Algiers, Fez, Marrakesh, Sefrou, Tiznit, Istanbul and Salonika each produced distinctive Jewish experiences. Yet across them we find recurring themes: commercial interdependence, linguistic exchange, communal autonomy, urban proximity, transregional mobility and political vulnerability. The Mediterranean itself made such interaction possible. Its ports and trade routes connected communities across political and religious boundaries. Jewish merchants moved between Muslim and Christian societies; Sephardic refugees transformed the Ottoman world; North African Jews participated in European commerce; and intellectual traditions circulated through Arabic, Hebrew, Ladino and other languages. The Jewish Mediterranean was therefore not a peripheral phenomenon. It was one of the threads holding the region together. A History of Translation Perhaps the most appropriate metaphor for Jewish life in the lands of Islam is translation. Jews translated between languages, cultures, legal systems and commercial environments. They translated Arabic philosophical works into Jewish intellectual discourse; merchants translated commercial information across linguistic boundaries; diplomats translated political intentions; and families translated cultural practices from one generation and geography to another. Moroccan Jews performed this role particularly effectively because Morocco itself was a crossroads of Arab, Amazigh, African, Mediterranean and European influences. The Jewish experience therefore provides an exceptional window onto the processes through which civilizations interact. Cultural exchange rarely occurs between abstract civilizations. It occurs through individuals who speak several languages, travel, trade, marry, study and negotiate. Jewish history in Muslim societies is consequently also a history of cultural mediation. From Coexistence to Interdependence The concept of coexistence can sometimes imply that two communities merely tolerated one another. The historical evidence suggests something deeper: interdependence. Muslim societies often depended upon Jewish merchants, artisans, physicians and intermediaries. Jewish communities depended upon Muslim political authorities, markets, customers and broader social structures. Neither community existed entirely independently of the other. This interdependence explains why the departure of Jews could have such profound consequences. When a community disappears, it takes with it skills, commercial relationships, cultural practices and social memories. The disappearance of Moroccan Jewish communities therefore changed Morocco itself. What Was Lost With Jewish Emigration? The mass emigration of Moroccan Jews represented a demographic transformation, but its consequences were cultural as well. Commercial networks were disrupted; crafts declined or changed; multilingual environments became less diverse; synagogues and communal institutions lost their social function; and shared neighborhood cultures disappeared. For Muslim Moroccans, the departure meant the disappearance of familiar neighbors and commercial partners. For Moroccan Jews, migration meant separation from ancestral landscapes. Yet the loss was not absolute. Moroccan Jewish culture survived in diaspora communities and, increasingly, in Moroccan heritage initiatives. The contemporary revival of Jewish heritage is therefore not the creation of something new. It is a rediscovery of something that had been partially obscured by demographic transformation. Toward a Balanced Interpretation of Jewish-Muslim Relations A responsible historical interpretation must resist ideological simplification. Jewish life in Muslim societies cannot be used merely to prove that Islam is tolerant, nor can episodes of Jewish suffering be used to prove that Islam is inherently hostile to Jews. The same applies to Morocco. Moroccan Jewish history should not be transformed into a national self-congratulatory narrative. The existence of conviviality does not erase discrimination; the existence of discrimination does not erase conviviality. What makes Moroccan history intellectually valuable is precisely this coexistence of contradictory realities. The historical record shows that Moroccan Jews were protected but unequal, autonomous but dependent, integrated but distinct, influential but vulnerable. They participated in Moroccan civilization while maintaining their Jewish identity. This is not a weakness of the historical narrative. It is its greatest strength. The Contemporary Significance of the Moroccan Model In the contemporary Middle East and Mediterranean, the Moroccan experience has acquired renewed political significance. Morocco’s recognition of Jewish heritage, its relationship with its Jewish diaspora and the presence of Jewish cultural institutions demonstrate that historical memory can become an instrument of contemporary diplomacy. The Moroccan-Israeli relationship has also acquired a transnational dimension because Moroccan Jews constitute a human bridge between the two societies. Their memories, family ties and cultural traditions create channels of communication that formal diplomacy alone cannot reproduce. Research on the Moroccan-Israeli relationship has examined this movement from a shared Moroccan past toward a new strategic relationship (Chtatou, 2023). Yet the historical significance of this relationship extends beyond contemporary geopolitics. It demonstrates how diasporas can become agents of international relations. The Moroccan case therefore suggests that historical memory can be transformed from a source of division into a resource for dialogue—provided that memory remains historically honest. Can Moroccan Conviviality Become a Contemporary Political Resource? The contemporary appeal of Moroccan convivencia lies in its potential to demonstrate that Jews and Muslims can share cultural and social space without abandoning their identities. This does not mean transplanting Moroccan history mechanically into other conflicts. Historical models cannot simply be copied. Nevertheless, Moroccan Jewish-Muslim history offers several principles of broader relevance: recognition of plural belonging, preservation of minority heritage, cultivation of shared cultural memory, protection of religious institutions, and the normalization of intercommunal contact. Such principles may have relevance for contemporary Mediterranean societies and perhaps, under very different political circumstances, for Israeli-Palestinian relations. But the lesson should not be formulated as a simplistic claim that historical coexistence automatically produces political peace. Peace requires institutions, political agreements, economic development and security. Cultural memory can support these processes, but it cannot substitute for them. Conclusion: A Shared Mediterranean Past and a Shared Human Future The history of Jews in the lands of Islam is ultimately a history of human proximity. For centuries, Jews lived within societies governed predominantly by Muslims and developed complex relationships with their neighbors. They were legally differentiated, but they were not socially isolated. They were protected, but their protection was conditional. They experienced discrimination, but they also experienced prosperity. They encountered episodes of violence, but they also participated in deep forms of cultural exchange. The concept of dhimma captures the institutional framework of this relationship but not its entire social reality. Legal inequality existed alongside communal autonomy and economic participation. The Mediterranean city transformed these structures into lived relationships. In Cairo, Alexandria, Jerusalem, Damascus, Tunis, Algiers, Istanbul and Salonika, Jews participated in commercial and cultural worlds shared with Muslims and Christians. In Morocco, these relationships became particularly deeply rooted. Fez, Marrakesh, Sefrou, Debdou and Tiznit demonstrate the diversity of Moroccan Jewish experience. The mellah was at once a space of communal identity and part of the wider city. Jewish merchants contributed to regional commerce; artisans served Muslim customers; physicians crossed religious boundaries; diplomats connected Morocco to Europe; Judeo-Arabic and Judeo-Amazigh cultures developed through linguistic contact; Jewish saints became part of shared sacred landscapes; and music and cuisine crossed communal boundaries. The Moroccan experience also demonstrates why historical memory must remain critical. Mohammed V’s position toward Moroccan Jews during the Vichy period represents an important example of political protection and resistance to the full application of European antisemitic policy, but it does not erase the discriminatory legislation imposed under the Protectorate. Likewise, the existence of Jewish cultural flourishing in Muslim societies should not obscure episodes of persecution, while those episodes should not be allowed to erase centuries of coexistence. The comparison with the Holocaust must remain equally precise. European antisemitism developed distinctive theological, political and eventually racial forms, culminating in Nazi Germany’s systematic genocide of European Jewry. This historical catastrophe cannot be equated with the unequal legal status of Jews under Islamic rule. Yet acknowledging this distinction does not require minimizing anti-Jewish violence in Muslim societies. Comparative history becomes meaningful only when differences of scale, ideology, institutional structure and historical context are respected. The idea of convivencia should therefore be rescued from both romanticism and dismissal. It should not signify an imaginary world without conflict. It should describe the historical capacity of different communities to share social space, economic institutions, cultural practices and urban environments while retaining distinct identities. In this sense, Jewish-Muslim conviviality was real, even though it was never perfect. The deepest lesson of Moroccan Jewish history is perhaps that belonging is more complicated than legal status. A population can be juridically subordinate and culturally central. Jews were not always equal to Muslims within the classical political order, but they nevertheless became part of the historical substance of Moroccan civilization. Their language, music, crafts, commerce, architecture, religious traditions and memories became Moroccan. Their departure in the twentieth century therefore represented not merely the migration of a religious minority but the disappearance of one component of a plural society. The continued existence of Moroccan Jewish culture in Israel, France, Canada and elsewhere demonstrates that migration transformed rather than extinguished that heritage. Today, the recovery of Jewish Moroccan heritage offers an opportunity to reconstruct national memory on broader foundations. It invites Morocco to recognize that its history was never exclusively Muslim, Arab, Amazigh or Jewish, but was created through the interaction of all these dimensions. Jewish heritage is therefore not an exotic addition to Moroccan identity. It is one of its historical layers. The broader Mediterranean story leads to the same conclusion. Jews, Muslims and Christians were not separate civilizations living in permanent isolation. They were participants in a shared Mediterranean world characterized by mobility, translation, commerce and cultural borrowing. Their histories intersected in markets, ports, courts, schools, workshops, households and shrines. The history of Jews in the lands of Islam should consequently be read neither as a story of uninterrupted tolerance nor as one of uninterrupted persecution. It is a history of negotiated coexistence: unequal but productive, vulnerable but resilient, sometimes conflictual but frequently intimate, and capable of producing extraordinary cultural creativity. Such a history does not diminish either Judaism or Islam. On the contrary, it makes both histories more intelligible. Judaism in the Muslim Mediterranean was shaped partly by Islamic civilization; Islamic civilization was itself enriched by Jewish participation. The two traditions developed not only in opposition but also through contact. The recovery of this history is therefore not an exercise in nostalgia. It is an intellectual necessity. At a time when Jewish and Muslim identities are frequently presented as inherently antagonistic, the historical record demonstrates something more complicated and more hopeful: communities can disagree profoundly in theology and politics while sharing cities, markets, languages, cultural practices and memories. The Jewish history of the Muslim Mediterranean is, in the final analysis, a history of difference without complete separation. Morocco represents one of its most enduring examples. Its Jewish past reminds us that civilization is rarely produced by a single community. It is created in the spaces between communities—in the marketplace, the household, the school, the workshop, the port, the shrine and the city. That is where conviviality becomes historically meaningful: not as a myth of perfect harmony, but as the accumulated experience of people who, despite unequal institutions and profound religious differences, learned over generations to inhabit a shared world.
